Rick Perry's underwhelming debates: Do they matter?
The LA Times ^ | 9/27/11 | Andrew Malcolm

Posted on 09/27/2011 6:34:00 AM PDT by TexasFreeper2009

This is a cautionary tale about reading too much into the early debate showings of any party's candidates, no matter how good or bad.

Technically, you are correct.

Well, she only got 35 votes at the Straw Poll out of 17,000.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that she's not yet running?

What do you think?

No, that can't be it. Never mind.

Of course, but there was a provision for write ins. Perry had over 700 and if this support for Palin is as strong as those here on FR want to make us believe, why weren't her supporters showing up at the Straw Poll to vote for her?

It's because her support has been vastly overrated and once she is subject to the same intense scrutiny of the others, she is not going to look like the savior some portray her to be.

>>Sending the illegals back home would not devastate the economy.<<

That statement indicates to me that you have no concept of the impact of illegals either pro or con. Our conversation can just as well be over.

No. That would be illogical at best.

The fact you think otherwise means you have NO IDEA what 9%+ full time unemployement means, or what 50% unemployment among black youth 16 to 24 means.

Employment first ~ BS later.

>>Did you miss the part where Palin said it is impossible to send them all back?<<

What part of my last post to you did you not understand? Those that don’t register will be found and sent pack. No action will be taken until the boarder is totally and completely secure with a fence and “however many” military personnel it takes to guard it.

Any sane person knows that there is no way, either politically or humanely, that all those who are currently in this country without documentation be “sent back”. We, yes we, have elected politicians who have allowed this situation to get to the untenable condition it is now in. Palin has articulated the best plan that I have heard so far.

Requiring all those in this country register is indeed reaching out.

http://immigration.about.com/od/immigrationlawandpolicy/a/palin.htm~ this was what Palin said during the 2008 race.

She did not differ from the main guy ~ McCain.

But notice, she did slip in the "follow the rules" thought, and that's Conservative code for "go get visas back home".

It's quite easy to ship all the illegals back. Not that it's a trivial question but no one would expect them to get on the Interstates and start hoofing it back.

We have more than our fair share of these guys in the DC area. Virtually all of them here for any length of time have their own automobiles.

Then there are airplanes. They fly. I worked up the numbers some time back but it's easy to show that just the empty seats currently on airplanes over a 6 month period are sufficient to take all these guys to a border crossing.

Buses exist.

Food can be brought to stores along the routes. Portapotties are certainly available nationwide.

Just what is it about shipping out several million people that's not possible?

>> This is cherry picking what Palin said.<<

No, it’s taking all the Palin said and putting it into context. That’s exactly what I have done with Perry. I haven’t specifically singled out any candidate to date that I will support without further vetting. From what I’ve been finding out about Perry it will not be him.

Well said. While I may not agree 100% with Perry’s decisions as Governor, I do understand his reasons for (most) of them. I can support Perry without resorting to the ABO vote I was forced into in 2008.
While I find Cain interesting, I have a lot of trouble with someone naive enough to suggest that Republicans should pass a bill as is with a “Gentleman’s agreement” to make it right after it’s passed. Huh? How long has this guy been around?
Romney? Not an option. I don’t even think I can pull the ABO lever for Romney.
Bachman? Even if I blame her countless gaffs on her staff, I cannot support someone that makes such poor choices in her critical personnel.
Palin? Didn’t know she was running - last I heard she was still giving speeches about what is wrong with no plan to fix any of it.

Zogby interactive online poll is so inaccurate that “real clear politics” does not include it on its website. Zogby poll is an online straw poll where only a group of political junkies who are registered with his polling organization are polled. It does not represent at all the broad Republican base.

Interesting. I think you’re right about a lot of things. I will, however stick with Perry because he knows how to govern. The immigration issue can eventually be forced to the front burner by the people. It better be because the Mexicans coming in are not nearly as important as the others getting in. We deserve to have our borders protected by the federal government. Troops not fences. Perry is the one candidate who knows the entire story. Perry is also counting on the public eventually understanding that the debates (haha) are worthless.
The vaccine issue is a non-issue. I personally know hundreds of parents who simply opted out.

I want to know what Palin is going to do.

You sound like Maxine Waters. Perry is not a debater. That’s fine with me. His governing skills (not saying business skills) are the best by far.

Some of us think a static defense is superior to armed troops prepared to fire on what are essentially civilian mobs.

Bet you never looked at it that way ~ so here's another one. Little Billybob goes off to the Mexicanborder and while he's there they have to stop a mob of 5000 women and chillun rushing the border.

They fire on the crowds using M60 machineguns, and maybe calling in some artillery.

Do you really want little Billybob coming back to live next door to you?

A market preference technique has been developed that depends on a Zogby type fixed cell reference combined with a bit of data mining on the same items.

It's a fairly sophisticated way to determine public opinion, and some parts of it are understandable ONLY to serious statisticians, but it could easily supplant the ABC/CBS/FOX type "call 583 people" polls.

As far as the vaccine goes, that wasn't the issue. It was the little girls ~ normal human beings leap to the defense of their daughters and other young girls INSTANTLY.

What you don't want in that response is to be perceived as a threat.

He screwed up on that part of it ~ and the second he seemed to be a threat he lost everybody's attention.

Buddy of mine used to do a lot of prosecuting in New Jersey and New York ~ back in the post WWII period. He said any time there was the slightest opportunity to have a wedge issue like a little girl in the case he had a guaranteed conviction ~ didn't even have to think about the details.

BTW, that's why Michelle Bachmann was free to say anything she wanted about the vaccine ~ she was perceived as defending little girls ~ by normal human beings that is.
