Things are very different today. Back then Rush was pretty much a lone wolf; today talk radio is everywhere. The MSM are significantly weaker today. Fewer people getting news from the MSM and more from the Internet. Fox News wasn't around then.

The Dems would be playing with fire if they shut things down and assume most people will blame the Republicans. Might work out that way, but it might not too.
