BTT. My general rule is never to ascribe to evil what may be explained by stupidity. But in this case the stupidity part turned out not to be the case. And that leaves evil.

So what could they really be trying to accomplish? Anti-gun propaganda, check. Planting of actual evidence against U.S. gun dealers, check. Justifying the increase in regulatory power given to an agency of the federal government? Double check. People just died for that. Anyone who isn't appalled isn't paying attention.

I think they were going after something bigger - but I have no idea what it could have been.

Was the Southern Law Poverty Center putting out back-up propaganda on a related issue? Like they did with the 'vast right wing conspiracy' issue. Was the FBI and top cops involved in spreading stories to damage an American subgroup?
