"They sent us letters. They phoned it in. They asked their retailers, you know, in their neighborhood, where do I find a card that says this? Hallmark Creative Director Derek McCracken told NPR. And again, loss of job, like any loss, is a grieving process. And so we have to acknowledge as soon as possible what had happened and then try to support them. So that's where we kind of offer more cards on the, you'll get through this, versus dwelling on the loss of the job itself.

Rush just mentioned these on his show... one of the cards “Don’t think of it as a layoff - think of it as a break between stupid bosses”...

I can’t wait to send one of these cards to the WH after the Presidential election.

“the new norm...”
Well, it is obviously the “norm” if cards are being printed just for this type of thing. I have sent a “thinking of you” card along with a casserole and a pound cake to several people who have been laid off. I know it isn’t much but hope that the person feels that someone feels their loss.

I guess National Grandfathers Day on 9/11 didn’t sell enough cards.
Hallmark: Always ready to jump in with a card. For a price.

The Layoff card has the message on the outside.
“Why send a crummy card, being laidoff isn't funny,
if you want to send a gift, send a little money!”

A lot of people are affected by layoffs. It seems to be a more specific version of a card to express regret about one's circumstances.
At least they didn't come out with a "So Sorry Your Parents Are Gone" card after the Menendez brother's trial. /sarc

LOL. This is just Hallmark finding a new way to gin up some business and make a couple $$$$$$. They aren’t giving the cards away. This says more about how Hallmark flogs certain days and events to generate business. Grandparents’ day, layoffs, cards for when you just feel sick (and aren’t in the hospital), and then the ultimate, “Just Thinking of You” card for the days that have no special event. Mindless consumerism.

Next Hallmark will have a celebratory DADT for newly “out of the closet” military members.
It wouldn’t surprise me.
