To listen to the recent Republican Presidential debates, you'd think illegal immigration was the biggest threat to the U.S. economynot to mention to the rule of law, our social fabric and national security. We hate to spoil the political reverie, but the real immigration story these days is how many fewer illegal migrants are trying to get into the land of the free.
That's the news from the Department of Homeland Security, which reports that border apprehensions have dropped to their lowest level in nearly 40 years. For fiscal 2010, arrests were 463,000, down from 724,000 in 2008a one-third decline in two years.

Tell that to the Mittbots. Tell that to Karl Rove for trashing O'Donnell and Ed Rollins for trashing Sarah Palin. Tell that to all the white-shoe crowd who've backstabbed Main Street Republicans countless ways and in countless words.
Remember Rockefeller giving the finger to conservative delegates ON NATIONAL TELEVISION? Remember him comparing Barry Goldwater's supporters -- literally, out loud, and at 8 pm on national prime-time convention television -- to Nazis and fascists? He used the word "Nazi" to describe Main Street Republicans who wouldn't bow down and kiss his feet.
Try me another, Eva -- nobody's listening. This is primary season, not kiss-and-make-up wuvvy wuvvy woo season.
I live in the NW corner of WA state and we have the same graffiti, and I’m betting that we don’t have anywhere near the percentage of illegals that you have.
So what is your point? Ignore the problem? Never mind the illegals, vote for Perry anyway because.... because ... because he's not Obama? We had a chance to make that campaign in 2008. How'd it come out?
“Lewis Tappan and other prominent New York businessmen active in the Abolitionist movement of the 1850’s actually advocated emancipation of the slaves (uncompensated, of course) and “repatriation” of same to Africa (how do you repatriate a fourth-generation immigrant?), and then replacing them with millions of Chinese coolies under indenture contracts. “
Very interesting. I was aware that Lincoln was a big promoter of that ‘Colonization’ effort. He was trying to do it even during the Civil War, and only gave up when the effort proved to be impossible. He tried sending American blacks to Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America. This can be a Fun Fact on the CW threads when the South bashing and Lincoln worship gets out of hand. Fredrick Douglass knew Lincoln, and didn’t have quite the elevated opinion of him that we commonly hear today.
I know. I posted that to support you.
Unfortunately it’s not just the Left throwing out the 11 million number, it’s also the treason lobby wing of the GOP.
If pointing out Rick Perry’s flaws helps Romney, then I guess we know how the RINO votes are being divided. Perry is no conservative. That he happens to love illegal aliens to boot is just icing on the cake. You can malign other candidates on that issue all you want, but it doesn’t somehow make Perry a better candidate. It just makes him common. And I would be the first to tell you, Rick Perry is not common. He is an exceptional...RINO.
“Its a fact that most of the anti-immigration/anti-Perry articles on FreeRepublic are posted by Libertarians. I do a check every time one is posted.”
Where would those anti-immigration/anti-Perry articles posted by Libertarians be? I’d like to read them, and I’d enjoy seeing big “L” libertarians around here (I’m not one, but hey, it’d be interesting to meet one). Since you do a check ‘every time one is posted,’ I’m sure you have them all at your fingertips, so speak right up!
no truth seeking conservative in America today can in good conscience support anything like this which is demographic suicide for us and our way of life
Perry has simply screwed the pooch and showed himself for what he is another Bush style panderer to latinos..and my Upshur county kinfolks warned me btw
it just is what it is...these are NOT first generation business class and land owning Cuban or Nicaraguan or Salvadoran exiles we're talking about fleeing communism rather than face prison or firing squads with only their suitcases leaving assets behind for confiscation
these are peasants...hard working perhaps...but huge fodder for the Democrat voting block..new latino immigrants vote almost as bad as blacks
we simply cannot move in that direction nor encourage more to come
it will end our way of life and we will become Brasil I think...and I know Brasil having lived there and have two daughters from that time here with me now

Actually, he never gave up.
The week before he was assassinated included an interview with Gen. Dan Sickles (of the Wheatfield at Gettysburg), who had been down in Panama on an extended, confidential special embassy and had come back to report to Lincoln on what he had found. He was scoping out Panama for a canal. The concept was to send perhaps 2,000,000 emancipated blacks down to Panama to dig the Canal (this was pre-Walter Reed, so you can imagine what the casualties would have been), and then stay in the area -- the survivors, anyway -- and become the new residents of that country, a new Liberia in effect.
Sickles was talking to Panamanian locals and to the government of New Granada in Bogota. The U.S. State Department files that should contain Sickles's journals and daybooks have been gone through and filletted, according to FReeper GOPcapitalist, who did a search about eight years ago.
Lincoln's interest in colonization was very much alive and well on the day he died. There are no notes of his interview with Sickles, which took place about the 10th or the 11th, when of course the air was full of the good news from Appomattox.
Thanks mate...excellent post.
That game is over.
Simple observation tells you that not every issue is split down the middle ~ with half the respondents being pro, and the other half anti, but in the aggregate, the way elections go in this country, the sense of the public does tend to be split half and half.
What that means is that for the smaller issues ~ to wit "immigration", claimed elsewhere in this thread as a MINOR concern ~ the public may well divide 90/10, and not 50/50.
This could be any other smaller issue as well, so this isn't peculiar to immigration. The consequence is that 90/10 is going to be 4% times .90 or .10 ~ giving you 3.6% of the electorate on one side of the question and .4% on the other side.
With a 50/50 division otherwise, you add that 3.6 to one side ~ giving you 53.6%, and you take it away from the other side giving you 46.4.
You then add the .4% to 46.4 for a result of 46.8%, and you deduct the .4% from 53.6 % giving you 53.2%. The net difference is 6.4%, or in American electoral tradition, a LANDSLIDE!
That's what that 4% interest in immigration can do to you.
Political analysts who dismiss immigration may well find their side losing it's shirt. This definitely happened when Bush came out with his "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" idea which was soundly thrashed by Republicans and Conservatives. That 4% shifted base so fast it was positively breath taking. When it came to the Obama election, those folks had no interest in voting for McCain since he was no different than Obama on that issue.
Another hidden agenda item is homosexuality. The voting public doesn't seem to care if Democrats have sexual dysfunctionality ~ see Bill Clinton, Tony Frank, etc. They do seem to care if a Republican steps out of line (although there are a couple of exceptions ~ Vitter's diaper years spring to mind).
It's a small difference ~ maybe 2% ~ but if that 2% just stay home Democrats win and Republicans lose.
I think you folks saw this phenomenon at work with your boy Rick. He seemed OK on most the big issues, but it was on the smaller issues where he was not different than the Democrats that he simply lost our attention. Why would I want to run a guy who's soft on illegals if I know that is going to discourage Conservatives from even bothering to vote?
By now thoughtful Conservative realize that we have to beat the Democrats and we can do so provided we are able to turn out our base to vote.
Obama is so bad that he is even scaring away illegals.
Now, about the Chinese, we were drawing on what amounted to the top end of the Chinese equivalent of their middle class by bringing in Coolies.
No doubt those contracts for indenture wouldn't have lasted long.
It’s illegal to pay someone a fair wage for a job that’s only worth $5.00 per hour. If the government didn’t criminalize employment, we’d have fewer unemployed.
I’ve always argued that there are no jobs American’s won’t do.
There are, however, jobs Americans won’t do for the pay the employer is offering.
If there were no illegals, the employer would then have to raise the pay scales to simply get employees.
(In other words, illegals depress wages.)
Traditionally, when industries can no longer afford the cost of labor, they automate.
Robots on the assembly line replaced human workers; the cotton gin replaced the cotton/seed seperators while the automatic cotton picker replaced the cotton-picking slaves after the Civil war; etc, etc, etc.
Illegals prevent this and depress wages.
"Kuh li" = "bitter strength", i.e., strong men, but bad, bitter lives of grinding poverty. They weren't middle class at all, from what I've read.
This is very true, and a lot of conservatives and FReepers, especially the "economic conservatives" a.k.a. RiNO's, overlook that America is not just an economic experiment or a get-rich-quick scheme or a workshop in which highly-motivated acquisitors can realize their personal rant: "I MUST be allowed to achieve my destiny!!"
The American Experiment has social and political dimensions as well, and these too must be conserved for posterity by each generation.
Indeed. Marxist have been able to convince many that none of that matters. That everything is interchangeable and replicable. It is not Washington, Jefferson or Adams that mattered but just their ideas which are of course universal. That Chang, Garcia and Kunta Kinte could have and would have produced all that our founders did. The fact that did not and has not happened is just the evil white man keeping the world down.
We are the Borg and you WILL be assimilated.
