Historically, capitalist competition has resulted in monopolies with no help from government. Rockefeller and the turn of the century trusts were the result of aggressive, war lord type competition. Research Edison’s war against Tesla over AC or DC electrical grids to see how far companies will go to protect their turf and retard progress. Research business espionage, price fixing, cartels, etc., let alone the traditional cozy relationship between the CIA and businesses such as ITT, Air America, and a long list of corporate cover operations, to the point that the CIA was known as “The Company”, a rather scary notion for anti-fascists.
Conservatives suffer from 19th century conceptual models in a 21st century world. Capitalism does indeed have a tendency to become predatory, invasive, corrupt at the top and develop a ruling class aristocracy mind set. If competition is stiffled by zealot war lord practices, you no longer have capitalism, you have facism. Companies should be allowed to die due to their own stupidiy rather than an abrogation of the rules of fair business practices.
At some point, capitalist theorists are going to have to realize that if you vanquish your competition, you have nothing to keep you honest, your product improving, your management from becoming fat like ticks on a good hunting dog.
