Until the most recent GOP debate took place, I was starting to think that perhaps Gov. Sarah Palin had waited too long to get into the race (if, in fact, she is getting in). Everything seemed to be solidifying around a match-up between Gov. Perry and Gov. McRomney, and it appeared that everyone else was simply fighting for their place on the periphery.
But a strange thing happened on the way to deciding who the Republican nominee is going to be, and that strange thing was Perrys inexplicable refusal to recant his support for a Texas tuition waiver for illegal aliens. No matter how you slice it, his ongoing defense of giving nearly $100,000 (over four years) to pay for an illegal alien to go to college is an albatross around his neck thats so big even McRomney can see it.
Perry is good man, and in my opinion, has been one of the greatest governors to ever hold the office in Texas. But all that gets overshadowed when his response to criticism about using taxpayer monies to pay tuition for illegals is: If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than that theyve been brought there, through no fault of their own, I dont think you have a heart.
First, somebody on Perrys team needs to understand that illegals who go to college arent children theyre 18 years old or older (thats why theyre going into college instead of pre-K).
Secondly, even if they were children, on a matter of principle the whole idea is wrong (and its definitely not indicative of conservatism).
Think about it this way: What if someone breaks into my house and their kid tags along because its too hot for the kid to wait in the car. The argument could then be made that the kid ended up in my house through no fault of [his] own. Now, does the fact that the kid had no choice obligate me to provide him with a cool drink and a snack while my house is pillaged by his father?
No, no, no.
And this is why Congresswoman Michele Bachmann was right on the money when she said the program needs to stop because it is a magnet for illegals.
Perhaps Perry will correct himself here and well get to watch his inauguration in 2013 with smiles on our faces and pride in our hearts. But until he does, the door is wide open for Palin to step in and ride a conservative wave all the way to the White House.
Remember, she isnt even in the race and shes only trailing Obama by five percentage points right now
Gov Perryh. Now that is a GOP’er to look out for.

he should say it was a mistake, like he did with gardasil.
Congratulations!

but that’s heartless!
I guess she wanted to see if the front runners would self destruct or be unacceptable. If Perry crashes and burns, and a figure like Cain does not surge miraculously to take his place, then hopefully Romney will be unacceptable enough to her that she makes a personal bid.
13,000th thread? That is a real accomplishment. I just posted on Jim’s anniversary thread, but I think it is worth posting here for you and many of the great Freepers.
WOW...FreeRepublic has been a part of my life since 1998. I protested with other Freepers in Palm Springs, California, for Clinton’s impeachment, in front of Mary Bono’s office. I met some great people and have followed FreeRepublic ever since. I remember it well.
I moved to Kansas City in early 1999, and FreeRepublic came with me. I then moved to my husband’s birthplace, little town in the middle of nowhere Kansas, and FreeRepublic came with me. I have been through three presidents with FreeRepublic. It was a hell of a fight for Bush in 2000 and again in 2004. I remember it well.
Now, we have a real battle on our hands and without FreeRepublic, I could not make it through the next 14 months. I am so far from anywhere, FreeRepublic is all I have. You all enlighten me, you make me laugh with your wit and thought. You make me think and you make me cry. Nevertheless, I return, day after day, week after week, and year after year. I remember it all very well.
To Jim Robinson...my sincerest appreciation for this gallery of fine patriots you have put together. My heartfelt compliments to each of you. The 2012 Political season has officially started, and I think we are all in for a great deal of fun.
EAGLES UP FOR GOVERNOR PALIN! With 2ndDivisionVet to lead the way, we here at FreeRepublic will be your soldiers. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
Congrats on your anniversary thread. You are the single most reliable thread-starter here. Although you may know I’ve gone back and forth on your favorite candidate, I always pay attention to those threads you post because they are invariably of interest.
Thanks for your service to FR.
Thank you very much!
Another problem about Romney is the distance he puts between himself and the Tea Party. He's trying to make the Tea Party appear irrelevant. If he were as “conservative” as he claims (a claim I never bought) he'd have been attending Tea Party rallies long ago. How can you be conservative and frown on the Tea Party?
Harry Reid has stated on more than one occasion that the Tea Party is “dead” and I almost think Romney has the goal of proving him right by winning the nomination without the Tea Party support.
For Romney to claim to be a conservative but keep a distance from the tea Party would be like a BIG Government liberal candidate avoiding events for teachers and unions of other government entities. I'd be wondering about that.
Because of Romney's feelings against the Tea Party I would prefer Newt over Romney. At least Newt would mingle with the Tea Party thus making them revelant in the 2012 Campaign. And that's something Harry Reid and his ilk including the liberal media hope not to see. Chris Matthews would have a tingle running up his leg if a republican candidate won the Presidency WITHOUT the support of the Tea Party and so would Mitt Romney.
As for Sarah Palin. Perhaps she'd prefer to stay in the private sector where she could make much more money. Maybe, as you said, her goal is to run only if it appears a bad candidate (such as Romney)appears to be winning. Maybe she's looking to have a radio show and perhaps her own show on FoxNews. She'd do better financially.
Maybe she'll run, maybe she wont. Who knows.
At some point (at the very least) she will endorse somebody. One thing I'm sure about is that Palin would want to remain “kingmaker”. She's just being cautious at this point in the game. She's surely not going to endorse Bachmann and then have Bachmann come out with some major gaffe. Maybe she will watch Cain and see where he goes. I'm sure he'd be somebody Palin could endorse. I also think Perry would be one she would endorse.
In the end, if Romney did win the nomination, I'm sure she would ultimately endorse him as well but not with the passion she'd have doing it for a Cain or Bachmann. She'd be doing it more for the party and not as much for the ideology.
It would be my hope that Palin’s decision as to whether she runs or not depends on who crashes and burns and who moves up to become the front runner. I agree with you 100%
It seems to me that the RINO machine, although they would gag on dread of Perry, they might support him along with the Hispanic vote, disenchanted Democrats, Republicans and Independents. They want a northern liberal, obviously. Bad.
If they were giving the presidency away it would never be to Sarah. I know I live for the McClatchlyiie-Marrissstt poll results.
What if Cain gains ground in the polls and then she jumps in. Do you think Cain's supporters will abandon him, or will they stay with the person that worked hard and showed up at the debates and earned their trust, donations and support/vote?
A magnet for illegals? What, border hopper line cutters are now planning their children’s college prospects when determining which coyote to pay to get them across the border? Is there a competition to get into Texas sweatshops or work as housekeepers, because of the draw of tuition waivers?
Sorry, yes, the whole idea is stupid, and that Perry supports it isn’t just a problem, it’s a symptom of the whole ‘compassionate conservative’ idealism that makes for repeated bad decisions. There’s the attack point, not some stupid idea that this is some magnet for illegal aliens.
Not to mention the more accurate wondering of why it’d cost a hundred grand for four years of college - does this include room and board, or is this just the classroom costs that desperately need to be cut?
I’m not defending Perry on this - it’s just plain wrong, as is any nanny state idea that crosses the conservative radar. I just think the whole method of attack is stupid as well. We have some very serious issues to deal with, not the least of which is getting rid of illegals, and also controlling public employees. Obscuring both those issues with silly branding of such programs as being magnets for illegals just dumbs down the conversation, and makes for easy to dismiss statements for ‘independents.’
I think she might hold back if Cain proves unexpectedly strong. Cain is one of the most sensible primary candidates.
It might not be a magnet to illegales with little tots in tow, but if the kids are three to four years from college age, why not?
Is there any reason to believe that Palin’s views on immigration are any different from those of McLame?
It isn’t that the tuition is the only magnet. It is just one of many. I can’t believe anyone would think it was the only one.
Is there any reason to believe that Borough Park isn’t a Romneybot or Perrywinkle trying to confuse the sheeple?
I don’t know.

I don’t know.
