Reporting from Tampa, Fla. -- A black, threatening cloud hung low over the Orange County Convention Center on Saturday evening as top members of Gov. Rick Perrys brain trust left a place their candidate would love to forget.
At best half showed up, leaving tables groaning with uneaten bagels, scrambled eggs, bacon and fruit cocktail. At the end of the governors rather perfunctory eight-minute speech, the breakfast crowd offered a rather perfunctory round of applause, the first public clue that all might not be going well in Perryville.
The Texans campaign fielded the largest cadre of volunteers and paid staff at the event. His staffers, wires dangling from their ears (a touch, and expense, that no other campaign matched), were very much in evidence Saturday inside the convention hall, as they distributed signs and buttonholed delegates. Another visible sign of the considerable investment Perry made in Florida: signage that included a huge banner, hanging in the foyer of the convention hall, which greeted the 3,000 delegates, starting on debate night; Perrys campaign paid an undisclosed sum to the state party for the privilege.

I know! You and many others here.
What’s worse is how all this about Perry came up right here on FR just a year or so ago during his primary in TX.
Did people think we would all just forget about it?
“Im still struggling to explain the scarcity of hardcore Perry supporters that told the rest of us to shut up and get on board with their candidate or we were guaranteed 4 more of Obama or even Romney.
Anyone seen one?”

They are all meeting over at La Raza Headquarters to organize a reconquista rally.
Even after all this time, I still don't think the Republican elites understand this.
My own opinion of when the final nail was driven in George W. Bush's coffin was when he tried to shove comprehensive immigration reform down our throats.
For some reason George W. Bush refused to defend himself from attacks by the mainstream media, but his conservative base continued to defend him, even after passing a massive new government entitlement for prescription drugs, until the comprehensive immigration reform effort, when the base at last abandoned him.
I seem to recall that Bush was in Eastern Europe on a trip when he was told that the American people led by his conservative base were resisting his Bush-McCain-Kennedy amnesty plan. Bush got very angry and arrogantly made some comment to the effect that he would shove it through no matter what. That's when Bush finally jumped the shark.
I think the same with Perry. I don't expect him to change his position on the illegals to come in line with the conservative base, because in his heart he believes he is morally superior to us on this. I think he will dig in and lash out when challenged on this.
This evangelical can spot a phony a mile off. Don’t be so quick to tar us all with the same brush. His prayer stunts remind me of Bill and Hill carrying that Big Black Bible around all the while they were running. I wonder what they did with it? It’s prolly in the corner where they threw it after the win. Perry will do the same.
I have to admit that was a pretty stupid mistake, but it is in line with a lot of western thinking. It’s also in line with a lot of Christian thinking. I happen to disagree with it, but....too late he said it, now he has to explain it or get people to forgive him. Who knows, it may happen, it may not. Depends on what happens over the coming months.
Technically that's true...Perry is a run of the mill Republican politician...A anti-American, pro globalist, ammesty loving, anti-sovereign, professional political Republican politician...
He's not a Republican in name only, he's a real anti American Republican...Conservative??? Not a chance...
Good points. He’s had very few debates in his career, and certainly none at the top campaign level.
On the bright side, he is an extremely successful politician who can learn from his mistakes. He will figure out to talk about illegals, about vaccines, and Social Security. Each can be finessed, and explained, if not perfectly, but enough to get the issue off the table.
But he doesn’t have much time left in this campaign. He might need another four years of recovering and improving before he has a real chance at the nomination. Most Republican candidates have previously run for president before making it to the top.
You make a great point. What seemed like a done deal back in 2008 quickly changed. In 2012, it will all shake out soon enough. I’m a Paul guy so I’m not the best barometer for how Perry fared in the campaign so far. As a Texan I’m inclined to like Perry (voted for him), especially if it is true he doesn’t like Karl “Snarkitect” Rove and the Ivy League Bush asshats. If Perry was smart, he would coopt all of Paul’s domestic policies and a toned down, but still non-neocon version of Paul’s foreign policy. This is true for Cain too.
That's a good point, winning w/o Texas can be very hard.
That's something Rush has pointed out, Perry would put us on a path where Republicans would HAVE to win w/o Texas. Just look at California. THAT's where Perry would take us.
No amount of polish is going to shine the turd of illegal immigrants that Perry holds in his hand.
Rick Perry had a bad showing and Herman Cain certainly set himself above the fray by not getting involved in the mudslinging frenzy of attacking Perry, but so did Newt Gingrich.
Why is this P5 straw poll so important?
I have never heard the name of it uttered before.
Now it is the defacto poll?
I understand that Cain elevated himself by not getting into gutter politics but Why is Cain ahead of Gingrich?
Stand by Herman, it is tough being at the top.
Supported Gore
Guardisil
Called us heartless etc.
Opposes fence
TTC
....
I don’t need any more to know he’s no conservative. And the Evangellicals better have a closer look. Teen STD prevention? How about not making it easier? No ‘safer’ Sex, no STD, no cervical cancer, no need for guardasil. Or did the EVs join the free love movement and abandon their Bible?
You tried warning about FT???
WE ARE WARNING YOU!!!! God man, open the eyes.
If Perry would just parrot Cain, he could still win the nomination, but I don’t think he will do something as simple as that.
he needed to convince us that he wasn’t a pro-amnesty RINO. He failed to do that. Instead, he insulted us so now it’s time we put that RINO’s head up on the wall so everyone can stare at it and learn from it maybe.
Perry...is lousy in the debates(each one worse than the last),

Ain’t that the friggin’ truth? The guy is D-U-M-B!
Illegal Mexicans? I wouldn’t go that far. Being Governor of Texas for a decade under the GOP banner had to have included a lot of support from conservative, GOP, US citizens.
It's getting tiring for me, but SP's entry "timing" is not about me or us voters, it's about the "competition and their vetting process" and the "legal timeline".
If you think you might be supportive of a Palin candidacy, you still have ample time to finalize your decision. However, she will have to finalize her's a lot sooner than your own. So, be patient. Look at the field now, there's no one who can close the deal for most, so it's still totally open.
Here's a good article (by Mark America) that will provide some insight regarding the timing of the Palin entry....
Oh Sheesh, does that mean we have to do another “it’s his turn”? I am sick to death of that. He’s going to have to learn fast and do something about it soon if he wants to get in. I doubt this country will survive another term of Obama.
