If I remember my history, Palestine was to be partitioned between Israel and Jordan.

The Jordanians got tired of forking over funds to the Palis so they set them loose to go their own way w/o Jorndanian funding. After all, the Palis kept biting the Jordanian hand that fed them.

Actually, the Palestinians did more than bite the Jordanian hand feeding them. Yasser Arafat's PLO tried to stage a coup against King Hussein's government (and murder the King and hid whole family to boot). The King turned the Jordanian Army loose on Arafat and company with orders to exterminate them. (See origins of Black September terrorist group.)

The Jordanian Army was kicking PLO butt until Arafat brokered a deal involving the UN. Arafat and the remains of his PLO were allowed to escape to Lebanon (with their weapons). When they got to Lebanon, they promptly set about destabilizing that country. The Lebanese civil war lasted off and on from 1975-1990.

The original partition plan had "the west bank" part of Israel, but when Jordan attacked Israel when it became a state, they annexed it.

Wow is that an understatement. After an unsuccessful attempt at overthrowing the Jordanian government, Jordan massacred the palis and ejected them out of the country. Google "black september." The terrorist group took their name from the events.
