It sounds like catch-and-release is being treated as an industry. Lots of arrests means abundant employment for the legal system. As a bonus, at tax increase time, it gives them extra leverage. Give us that tax increase, or you won’t be safe. There won’t be enough judges, attorneys, jails, court houses, or police.

I live at 5th and Wall - which isn’t too bad - but going Dow to 2nd or 3rd can be a real nightmare sometimes.

I'm in the North end of Seattle and I avoid going downtown as much as possible.  When I do, I'm heavily armed and try to do so only during daylight hours.

As I read it, the judge is basically saying that if the perp is back in his court, the judge will give him the maximum penalty. This is is something he can do.

I think a judge if he can give a restraining order to stay away from a single person, he also can give a restraining order to stay away from an entire community, if the need is there. At the very least, the judge is saying that the only way the guy can avoid going into his courtroom is to go away.

Old habit. I do the same with email. Once it’s been sent, you can’t take it back. :)

An arrest is worthless unless it results in a conviction and jail time.

We should be taking a hard look at the practices of the prosecutors and judges. If somebody is arrested for something substantial multiple, then the prosecutor should be obligated to not offer a plea bargain, but instead go for maximum penalty.

It might do some good to publicize some statistics on prosecutors relating to how many times a "customer" is re-arrested after plea bargain, and on judges who give skimpy jail terms to repeat offenders.

BINGO!

Since judges are mostly elected, publishing their records as to if they are hard or soft on crime before the primary and full election would do a lot.

Similarly, tracking individuals within the prosecutors office as to how tough they were on crime, and stopping some of the "plea bargaining" for career criminals would be a good idea as well.

too many criminals are getting arrested, and then let go, by a system that wants to be "gentle and fair. Oh, well.

When I go to Seattle, I always stay in Belltown. lol In fact, usually on 1st or 2nd and Bell or Wall. Yeah, I guess there are some unsavory characters, but better than Capitol Hill.

50 well placed shots would do wonders for that area. I think the neighborhood residents would be thrilled crime would drop so much so fast.

Exactly. I can solve the issue for $0.43 per person. Lead is cheap my friend.

Worrying about life with a criminal record is not in the thoughts of these lowlifes. It is not just Seattle, it is everywhere in the United States. A criminal record is no deterrent, and putting them up in the county Hilton is expensive for taxpayers due to all the "rights" bestowed upon criminals these days.

Just for the record, I am not an advocate of extra-judicial solutions to crime for the very reason you cited. I'm just saying that it is a natural evolution of society when they get fed up enough with it.

A far more civilized solution was practiced in Ft. Smith near the turn of the last century. It was highly effective and involved the community with hymnn singing outside of church.

Part of me says you’ve settled it, the other part tells me you want to argue about whether the left fingers or right fingers are dominant. /smile
