It would be a good argument...if the rich paid NO taxes or if anyone were actually arguing that the rich should pay no taxes.

Don’t minimum wage employees also benefit from roads and protection from marauding bands? Is that an argument to start raising their taxes?

This argument could be use to justify ANY expansion of government.

Think you should be able to make decisions for your family...well you wouldn’t have such a nice family if you had to fight off marauding bands!

Think you have a right to freely practice your religion...well you wouldn’t be able to worship if your church were beset by marauding bands!

This is exactly the way totalitarian regimes think.

“I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever." No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own — nobody."
You built a factory out there, good for you! But I want to be clear,
you moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for.
You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate.
You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.
You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory and hire someone protect against this because of the work the rest of us did.
Your built a factory and it turned out to be something terrific or a great idea - God bless. Keep a big hunk of it.
But part of the underlying social contract is you that take a hunk of it and pay forward for the next kid who comes along!
You're right, Liz, nobody did - including you! All your Mother's milk, all the education you got - the fact that you weren't raped and murdered long before this, it's none of your doing. So by your logic, we own you! If we decide you get to eat something, be grateful and shut your trap, you insignificant slave!
That's not what you had in mind, I know - you are much more important than to have your value judged arbitrarily, as you arrogantly choose to do to us. But you see, Liz, America already had a social contract before your grandfather was a gleam in your great-grandfather's eye. We had the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and - yes, we had the Bible. Under that social contract, your grandfather, your father, and you were given all the things that you say that you can command from us. Well, we expect to give it, all right - but not at your command and not in the way that pleases and flatters you.
We're doing more than you can think to command, and the only thing that's "wrong" about it is that you don't get the credit for it.

We're doing more than you can think to command, because of love.

If you get into a position where you think you can command gifts, gifts become impossible and the value is drained out of the effort.
