Hypothetical case. No, I wouldn’t do it out of love, or out of hate. I would do it to protect my dog - or my wife, child, family member, neighbor, etc. Simply because someone commits what is viewed as a “violent” crime does not automatically lead to it being a hate crime. Let’s say that, in order to feed my family after losing my job, I decide to rob a store. Someone in the store attempts to take away my gun, and the gun goes off killing that person. Did I act out of hate? NO! Yet, a violent crime occurred against another person.
