And that is the crux of the issue. As many others have stated, gays have always served in the US Military. It is the question not of rights but of "special rights" that will now pervade the discussion. IMHO, the citizenry has let down the military in this instance.

True, but the citizenry has been and is being propagandized from kindergarten up to accept homosexuality as normal, and there are more and more penalties for saying anything against it.
