You mean in the history of the United States we’ve always had to count on Mexicans to do those jobs? Of course not.
The problem is a complicated one, but when business started hiring illegals they pushed down the wages. What was a respectable $24/hour roofers job became an $6 hour job that came with all kinds of other nasties like not having an employer and having to stand around and hoped to be picked for the job. That is an unfair and biased market, not a free market using fair competition.
When businesses started using illegals at fast food restaurants, what was a good part-time job for people like teenagers became a depressed wage and working condition environment and employers started demanding American worker speak Spanish.
We didn’t become lazy as a nation, we found taking the jobs wasn’t worth it. Well, if we are going to make it worth it again we need to deport the illegals and create the demand for workers once again and let wages and working conditions come back as the markets demand.
