Isn’t there a historical pattern of really bad things happening within a few days of someone being assassinated in that part of the world?

No - I mean “in this world”.

As I recall, someone of some significance was assassinated in Afghanistan in the first few days of Sept 2001.

"As I recall, someone of some significance was assassinated in Afghanistan in the first few days of Sept 2001."

Ahmad Shah Massoud, assassinated September 9, 2001. He was one of the leaders in the effort to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan.
