Why Obama should withdraw
The Chicago Tribune ^ | September 18, 2011 | Steve Chapman

Posted on 09/18/2011 4:28:27 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

When Ronald Reagan ran for re-election in 1984, his slogan was "Morning in America." For Barack Obama, it's more like midnight in a coal mine.

The sputtering economy is about to stall out, unemployment is high, his jobs program may not pass, foreclosures are rampant and the poor guy can't even sneak a cigarette.

His approval rating is at its lowest level ever. His party just lost two House elections — one in a district it had held for 88 consecutive years. He's staked his future on the jobs bill, which most Americans don't think would work.

The vultures are starting to circle. Former White House spokesman Bill Burton said that unless Obama can rally the Democratic base, which is disillusioned with him, "it's going to be impossible for the president to win." Democratic consultant James Carville had one word of advice for Obama: "Panic."

But there is good news for the president. I checked the Constitution, and he is under no compulsion to run for re-election. He can scrap the campaign, bag the fundraising calls and never watch another Republican debate as long as he's willing to vacate the premises by Jan. 20, 2013.

That might be the sensible thing to do. It's hard for a president to win a second term when unemployment is painfully high. If the economy were in full rebound mode, Obama might win anyway. But it isn't, and it may fall into a second recession — in which case voters will decide his middle name is Hoover, not Hussein. Why not leave of his own volition instead of waiting to get the ax?

It's not as though there is much enticement to stick around....

Anyone who truly believes that Hillary is popular needs to contact me: I have a nice older bridge to sell them.

I bet it's one of those 153 bridges Obama spoke about, that are ready to collapse.

Or maybe not, since he didn't actually tell us where any of them are.

(I hope I'm not driving across any today)

This is the end for “progressives”. Obama is clearly an empty suit. Hillary is smart and effective about implementing policies that degrade the US.

It’s over.

Only question is does the GOP have the goods to reinstate Reganism? Or is that party too wedded to their Washington base?

In some ways the GOP reminds me of the Whigs.

You’d be surprised. She’s popular enough with the hardcore Liberal base and the PUMAs are still out there.

I have been expecting this to happen.

I don’t know about the Chicago Trib. Is it a typical leftie rag or what?

So, Obama raises close to $1 billion and then decides not to run for re-election......interesting concept.

The biggest problem is that there isn’t a lot of difference in the politicians of either party.

All career politicians should go. Once you have been in Washington for a long period of time you start believeing your own propaganda.

Term limits is one thing we need badly, and will never get.

Isn’t that Hillary popularity thing the biggest joke? I think she’s ‘popular’ because she’s seen as completely ineffective and without power. Everyone knows Obama calls the shots, so once again she’s what she always has been—a feminist icon who’s at the same time the victim of a MAN! She’s the ultimate Empowered Victim—praised for her achievments, excused for not achieving.

And if Obama thinks it's bad now, wait until Solyndra ripens into a full blown scandal. Instead of the beaches of Hawaii, he might be headed for Leavenworth and his new roommate Bubba.

That said, Obama will probably prefer Bubba to Moochelle.

The Dems are in a very bad spot for 2012. BO won’t win because he is hated by everyone but blacks. If Hillary runs against him in the primaries or if he steps down and she (or anyone else) runs, the blacks will be angry and not vote.

He’s going to dump Biden and get Hillary to run with him. It will make him more popular with the lesbians, and there are a LOT of lesbians.

Presidential encores are generally a bog of frustration, exhaustion and embarrassment. They are famous for lowest moments rather than finest hours. Richard Nixon was forced to resign in disgrace, Reagan had the Iran-Contra scandal, and Bill Clinton made the unfortunate acquaintance of Monica Lewinsky.

Typical lefty spin--Nixon = Watergate! Reagan = Scandal! Clinton = It's just about sex!

Never mind that piddly "ignoring Al Qaeda" thing that happened on his watch, or that "wall between intelligence agencies that led to 9/11" blip on the radar.

So now they want to check the Constitution? You can’t make this stuff up.

I have a brother like Obama. The guy is oblivious to the chaos around him which he created. They tend to think they're so compassionate all the while thinking everything is about them. There is absolutely no reasoning with these people. Even when you confront them with the facts, they'll ignore them.

The Democrats can't impeach the Obama as that would destroy their black vote and cause all sorts of internal party problems. The only thing the Democrats could do is to find some impeachable offense that they could legitimately decry. The problem with this scenario is that so many have stake their reputations on Obama (like Carville “40 More Years” book) that it makes them look like fools and the conservative Republicans even better.

They've dug themselves a very deep hole.

We can’t be naive about the power of the Clintons. As a National Review article frm a few years ago warned, “Always, always take the Clintons seriously.” Obama is so very terrible and HRC is so very shrewd that many independents and dems who wouldn’t vote for Obama again may vote for HRC.

Let’s pray that Obama ignores advice about not running again!

But it isn't, and it may fall into a second recession

DO the math yourself: If you take away the phony bologna deficit spending, which is about 9 percent of GDP ($1.4T), then we are in A DEPRESSION RIGHT NOW!

The Democrats are in a hard place: If they keep Obama they'll kill their chances in the House and Senate because of his downward drag. If they dump him, they lose the black vote, which would be the kiss of death.

It is notable that the left is unwilling to explore why Obama's economy is so far in the tank.
