ATLANTIC, Iowa There are only a few things voters here say they know about Rick Perry.
They know hes been governor for a while.
They know Texas is a big state with a lot of jobs.
They know Perry has a reputation for being brash and talking frankly.
And, after casting about for just the right Republican to take on President Obama, they know, for now, that he may be the one.
I cant quite explain it, said Steve Bennett, 59, who sized up Perry the other night over a plate of roasted turkey and green beans. Hes thick-skinned, hes already run a big state. Whatever his beliefs are, which I dont know yet, I think he actually believes them and has convictions. Hes the only one who can sit with Obama at the debate when Obamas in full campaign mode hell be tough to beat and maybe beat him.
So it is that Republican voters, at least those Iowans who took stock of Perry this week, are turning conventional wisdom on its head.
The thinking goes that the more measured and moderate Mitt Romney can appeal to a broader swath of independent voters. But Republicans here say its Perry who can best challenge Obama, expose him for the fraud they believe the president to be. They see Perrys fed-up-with-Washington message as theirs and one that can take him straight to the White House.
....Carole Doane, 55, who is unemployed, arrived at a Newton coffee shop Friday morning hoping to see another Ronald Reagan sunny and uplifting and personable and dignified, somebody whos experienced and has humility...

This genuine attitude
That's what will win, that's what will bring folks to the polls in droves.
Surprisingly neutral article from WAPO!
It then occurred to me the liberal media may well be nostaligic for the ‘good old days’...when they beat GWB to a pulp. Today, they have to grin & bear the scandals and outright treachery of this administration and its policies.
WAPO typists and NBC script readers are people too - they have to buy gas, food and pay mortgages.
They are probably salivating over a GOP President who they can pummel with impunity - get $2 gas, $3 lattes and skyrocketing home equity. You know they are at the water cooler whispering; “bring it on”.
Attitude?
Texas is not where you were born but a State of Mind, Heart and Attitude. Goes something like this: “Leave us alone to live our lives in peace and we will get along fine, if that is not satisfactory, we will deal with it.”
Rick is a Texan.
Other than jobs (and that’s huge), Independents will like his killing Obamacare, repairing social security, decreasing the debt, his experience in the military while advocating we get our guys home as soon as humanly possible and no more “adventure” militarism, his promise to secure the border on Day 1 with the manpower and technology needed to do it. These are just a few “secondary” issues they’ll like about him.
Yes, and the comment was made by an Iowan. :)
I’m going to start pinging you on every thread even remotely connected with Perry, you’re fun to watch. It may even push you over the edge if that hasn’t happened already.
On a lighter note Bachmann is toast, not because her views aren’t pretty much dead on but she’s not ready for primetime, she has a political tin ear and she’s unabashedly irritating.
That works in a Congressional election but not in a National one, especially for President.
Sarah has some of the same characteristics but she is far more charismatic and she knows when to shut up and keep her powder dry. In other words, Palin’s ear is far more politically sensitized.
Bachmann hasn’t crash and burned yet......but she will, mark my words.
You mess with me and you better read the rules here first. I do not take kindly to threats, and you have just made a personal threat.. The door is open for you to join pissant.
I see youre still pimping St. Rick...

Yes, and one wonders why. The question is, if Perry is the one, the one WHAT?
I was being facetious, but please specify the threat psycho.
BTW. I’ll put my posting record up against your’s anyday. We’ll see who gets their nads nipped.
Of course, Perry came early, worked the room, sat through all the speeches, ate, and went table to table shaking hands. This is how Perry will win.
Being Texan is not where you were born? hee hee hee

Great stuff TF, thanks for the links! :)
This is purely an aside but note this: “I cant quite explain it, said Steve Bennett, 59, who sized up Perry the other night over a plate of roasted turkey and green beans...” The Washington Post deems it important that you know what Mr. Bennett was having for dinner. If they came back to him no doubt you would know the color of his eyes and hair. That damn Post is noted for all this extraneous stuff.
I once had the occasion to meet with a Post writer and my first question was: Are you paid by the word? She laughed and said “No, by the adjective.”
I posted this on another thread and it is by far not all of his accomplishments or traits but just from my heart and head...

He will be a President for the people.

He will get our bloated government back to where it should be and he will reverse all of the current Admin stupid policies.
He will be one of the strongest defenders of this country people have ever seen.
Our soldiers will leap with joy to be under this Commander in Chief.
He WILL secure the border with boots on the ground and with upscale equipment without causing a problem with our bordering trading relationship with Mexico.
Is he perfect? No
He has made a couple of blunders ie: Exec Ord and TTC
But to his credit, he does listen to the people and will back down if they raise a ruckus.

[Perrys holding hands at campaign event]
.[Anita Perry] tries to help the governor not get too carried away with his own role. "I try to keep him grounded. Sometimes I wonder," she said. When he gets a little too puffed up, "I'm always saying: 'Who told you that you were cute today?' "
Still, she intends to get out on the campaign trail and play a more visible part.
"Not that I'm a vote-changer or a vote-getter or anything like that," she said. "But I'll do whatever I need to do because I think it's important that he get re-elected."
You have to grow thick skin, enjoy people, tackle big projects and, in all of it, keep family as a priority, she said.
The governor has also set his priorities. The staff knows to keep his schedule clear every Sept. 9. That's not his wedding day or an important birthday.

Governor Almost Wasn't--After years on ranch, Perry saw climate was right for politics
Anita: The nurse Rick Perry wants with him in the White House [excerpt] In a July interview with the Salem Radio Network, Gov. Perry said his wife was inspiring him to "get out of his comfort zone" and run for president because she was "disheartened" with the administration "healthcare-wise."
"Her father is an old country doctor," Perry said, "and she sees the demise of really quality healthcare and being able to take care of people like they need to be taken care of in this country and the innovations that have occurred in medicine."
Anita Thigpen Perry, 59, has a bachelor's degree in nursing from West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) and a master's degree in nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Texas Tech University's School of Nursing was renamed in her honor in 2008.
She worked as a nurse for 17 years in numerous settings, including surgery, pediatrics, intensive care administration and teaching. That experience adds credibility to her criticism of the federal healthcare law, a welcome asset for Perry as he struggles to explain why more than a quarter of Texans don't have health insurance - the highest rate in the nation.
Anita Perrys childhood was spent making house calls with her dad, Texas Tech University Chancellor Kent Hance told The Hill. Healthcare is a big issue to her and her dad being a doctor a country doctor she certainly has a lot of opinions that were formed even at an early age over healthcare. [end excerpt]
