Anonymous's Occupation Of Wall Street Begins At Noon (Slept Late)
Gothamist ^ | 9/17/2011 | Christopher Robbins

Posted on 09/17/2011 8:49:07 AM PDT by RightGeek

A loose coalition of left-leaning groups like Adbusters and Anonymous are beginning their "occupation" of Wall Street today at noon. Their goal is to "see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades, and occupy Wall Street for a few months." According to the protest's website, a "leaked bulletin from the New York Police Department reveals that they expect at least 5,000" to show up today, and ask participants to being "warm clothing" along with other provisions due to the recent cold snap. Mayor Bloomberg told his eponymous news organization, "People have a right to protest, and if they want to protest, we’ll be happy to make sure they have locations to do it. As long as they do it where other people’s rights are respected, this is the place where people can speak their minds …"

Once in place, the protesters claim they will "incessantly repeat our one simple demand until Barack Obama capitulates," but what exactly is that demand? We won't know until a week from now, when they "publicly deliver [their] manifesto to the White House and to the American media," but looking at their list of possibilities, they are anything but "simple." Then again, neither are the problems.

The occupation won't be entirely "peaceful," as Anonymous is promising to roll out a new, more powerful hacking tool to cripple websites. According to ITWorld, the group recently tested it by bringing down WikiLeaks and Twitter. If the protesters make it until Monday, they'll be able to greet President Obama as he swings into town to speak to the UN and schmooze with wealthy donors.

"If we have peaceful assemblies and debates about what our demands to President Obama should be, then bit by bit we can create a situation that will rival what happened in Egypt," the editor of Adbusters tells CNN. While the occupation begins at 12:00 p.m. at North Bowling Green, the protest will amass in earnest at 3:00 p.m. at Chase Plaza.

Reporting on the live stream....

First observation— there are a lot of white people at this rally. In fact, I haven’t seen much diversity in the crowd. Age range seems to be 20ish to 30ish. Lot of on-lookers.

Second observation— they have broken the crowd down into smaller groups with mega-phones at each group and they are group thinking. Question: what is the main problem in America?

Third observation— theme keeps coming forward of “corporate personhood.” “Dollars have replaced our voice.”

Fourth observation— the Anonymous group just issued a warning to law enforcement. They said for them not to use excessive force on anyone, or we will come to their aid. And to the rest, they said, Quote: “We are not as different as you think, we are you, we are anonymous, we are legion. We do not forgive, we do not forget, expect us.”

Thanks for that link.

I finally got to see some pictures of what was happening.
Associated with the pictures are tweets, which you can read by putting your mouse arrow on a given picture. I like this one:

“General Assembly at Bowling Green not very organized.”

Some folks on this FR thread are talking about this protest continuing for days. I doubt it. After Sunday, I expect darn few people left.

I am MORE opposed to anarchy. Not equally opposed. The status quo (which is what the initial poster seemed to be railing against) is not (in my opinion) as bad as anarchy. If you think it is, then go live in anarchy instead and then give me your opinion. With my blessing. I hope we have come to an understanding here. If not feel free to ask for further clarification.

I bet you’re right (about it not lasting very long). And hope so too. My only concern really, is that anarchists (funded by?) will come and create the kind of havoc we saw in London. I do find it a little surprising that no one is covering it.

You’re welcome!

At the moment, they are “marching around the perimeter” and after that they are going to break for dinner at 6pm and then get back together. The crowd has grown, but it is difficult to tell how many are actual protesters, and how many are on-lookers. A roving camera has interviewed folks. One guy was a Ron Paul supporter, and one guy said most of the crowd is hard left, but if “normal” people would come down, it could be an effective situation. Of course, anarchists are out in force, carrying red flags. And some type of Spanish influence group is walking around with masks on that look like theatre masks. I’m not sure what their agenda is. Overall, the crowd still remains majority white, tinted with olive, and very few of other races. Professionally printed signs are beginning to show themselves, but haven’t been able to read any of them yet.

I’ll report back later!

The crony crapitalist/crony socialist system we have leads to freaking anarchy.

They’re both opposed to all that is good. They both lead to extreme human misery.

Your argument seems to say that advanced cancer is worse than a cancer not quite as advanced. The slightly less advanced cancer will become more advanced if not treated.

I hate all cancer.

I forgot to add in my earlier post, the following...

At 7pm they will begin with another round of talks, which will be more “educational” in nature, one guy said. Also, at 7pm they are going to discuss renaming the park they are “occupying” and they are in the process of calling the “corporation” that owns the property, to make sure it is “okay” for them to “spend the night there.” (That’s sticking it to ‘em! LOL Rather ironic.)

I guess they will be showing propaganda images on the live stream until 7pm. That’s what is on right now. Evil gov’t, evil military, evil corporations...etc. Progressive blather. There have been several mentions of “world ordered socialism is a great thing.”

Chants being yelled during march time...

Whose street? Our street!

The people united will never be defeated.

The people are we.

Eat the rich. Feed the poor.

What do you want? Equality. When do you want it? Now.

We are the 99%.

Wall Street banks, you get high, we can see your greedy side.

We got sold out, they got bailed out.

Eat the rich. Feed the poor.

LOL! They want to kill the billionaires and feed them to Holder's people? Can we start with Warren Buffet and George Soros?

Thanks for the reports, daisy! This is great!

You are welcome! I thought that one got me tickled too, especially since the “rich” are funding their operation!

These hippies don't even understand that Obama is best friends with Goldman Sachs & Wall Street.

When Obama talks about "the rich" he means the middle class. Obama will never do anything to mess up relationship with donors like Goldman.

The richest counties in America surround Washington DC, not Wall Street.

“... they’re having to protest to find
out what they are protesting against.”

They are protesting that they do not have a job. The reality is if the unemployment rate went down to 1% they still would not have a job.

No, just that anarchy, once started is more difficult to contain. What we have now can probably be changed. As I said, if you want to live in anarchy, you are welcome to it. I much prefer to try to change this than to try to do something about anarchy once it starts. We are free to have differing opinions (I don’t know if you agree with that or not—you appear to want to tell me what I think, I certainly never even suggested that we shouldn’t do anything about the current situation.)

Thanks for your reporting. It seems to have fizzled, I guess. The most interesting thing was that the media ignored them. Probably for the best, altho I do think it was a *story*. Small perhaps, but a story.

Yes, I believe it has fizzled. I did catch it a bit last night and this morning. Numbers continue to drop in attendance, and in views on live stream.

They kept pointing out that they were demonstrating to America how to do “real” democracy. And they are right...they are showing “real” democracy and how ineffective it truly is! That’s why the founding fathers set up a republic. Individuals do not want to lump together as a whole. It’s fine in a crisis, but a pain in the neck overall.

What struck me as most interesting, as they “stormed” Wall Street today and about 100 or so of them blocked the foot traffic into the main area, is that the people going in to Wall Street area to do their daily jobs, showed a great deal more diversity in race than the “revolutionaries” who are trying to “equalize” the landscape of corporate America.

Plenty of irony to go around. Anyway, thanks for following with me! I learned a lot about psychological tactics used in crowd control from the progressive facilitators.

And though I am not from NY, I have to say, NYPD is the finest!!! I loved watching their careful and professional work. They set the bar high!! Hats off to them! I can see why they are considered heroes in their city.

Oh, and one final note, and then I’ll quit blathering...I observed that within the crowd their were equally trained crowd controllers who were there to disrupt the group and turn it to chaos. It was remarkable to watch them subtly work, and to see how devastatingly affective they were. They will always be this effective because it is more natural for humans to think as individuals.

Back in the 70’s, hippies were able to make more progress because conservatives had not delved into the psychological aspect of things. We have now, and we won’t get the wool pulled over our eyes quite so quickly this time around.

FReeguards, D.

You Rock Daisy Mae! Thank you so much for this, I really was a little put out not to have any coverage. :) And your insight was great too. Hopefully they will take their tents and go home now. And three cheers for the REPUBLIC! Democracy is for mobs. :)

What I cannot fathom is why you keep repeating to me “If you want to live in anarchy, you are welcome to it”.

???

If the current crony crapitalism can be changed, I will be the first to cheer. No signs of it yet.

I don’t see any easy way through and out of this mess. It’s a giant mess, of every sector of human endeavor. I loathe (as I said before) anarchy as much as I loathe the rotten crapitalist/socialist/verging into fascist cronyism. They’re both evil.
