And then there is “ where y'all at”, “down the road a piece” and other Texas phrases. There is the English you learn from a book and language you learn growing up. To say the language you learned from the area you are from is wrong, is well, just wrong. Also a big difference between the spoken and written word. The written word should be grammatically correct,the spoken word not so much.

Well, I was referring to the “dialect” spoken by youth in the black areas of Miami, the city where I live. And not just spoken. I have teacher friends in those communities who see this all the time. The kids are certainly not taught “Where you at” in their classes. If they want to speak that way fine, but it does not impress me if they are interviewing for a job. (Maybe this is just another aspect of the “pants on the ground” problem?)
