Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.
Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.
"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"
Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

World collapse? “...actually exist become evident...”
Sheesh. Why do I even bother talking to you?
You are neglecting to mention the "next woman". Hillary was the one who had the worst abuse by men and by her political party. She was more experienced and qualified (for her party) than perhaps Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin in many ways, yet she was trashed, humiliated, and left for gone by her party at that time. THAT was a real disgrace because Hillary had what it took to rise up in and survive national politics. To ignore that major slight of hand while focusing on the analysis and circumspection here seems to be either missing the obvious or staging the unobvious.
Guess you knew some Lieutenant Colonels’ wives at your place of employment. :)
It’s like a newspaper story without attribution.
UK newspapers are famous for stating a factoid as “...it has emerged.”
Sigh. Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in.
OK. This should be easy:
When Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann steals 900 FBI files to punish their enemies, I will defend Hillary Clinton.
When Sarah or Michele trash women who have been raped by their husbands, I will defend Hillary Clinton.
When Sarah or Michele makes $100,000 off cattle futures, I will defend Hillary Clinton.
When Sarah or Michele “drag a dollar bill through a trailer park,” I will defend Hillary Clinton.
When Sarah or Michele wins a senate seat because her husband cheated on her with an unpaid White Hosue intern, I will...
Well, I think you get the idea.
By the way, for those of you who are privately messaging me about Hillary’s woes, knock it off. I’m not going to defend her.
Good.
POST 39
To whit you either can not understand the serious disturbing nature of the statement you posted or more likely have no defense for such an outlandish statement.
And that’s what vetting is all about. It’s good for liberals and conservatives alike apparently.
Thanks for your response!
No offense but are you drunk? Post 39 was posted by YOU not me.
And why do freepers - when they are generally losing the argument if not the bottle - always start talking like Sir Anthony Eden? “To whit,” indeed.
Quite the FemaNazi reply.
Here I thought I have been posting to some knockout cheerleader hoty, and I get back its just the high school doorknob with terminal PMS.
Still, how the hell does anything you have posted to anyone refute Bachmann not being ready for Primetime with the impulsiveness?
” No female running mate this time around - not needed and too risky”
Several friends think it’s going to be Rubio.
Thank you. I just don’t like the nastiness part of it. It is cool to disagree with someone but there is no need to be disgusting.
I guess it’s me ‘cause I don’t understand half the posts here tonight.
I didn’t understand your original post in which you gave us a via dolorosa of Hillary’s troubles and now you’re talking about the vetting process of libs and conservatives. I’m assuming you’re a Perry supporter but can you just tell me what you are getting at? I’m genuinely confused.
I don’t want to disgust you but maybe it’s worth repeating what someone said yesterday about Michele Bachmann.
He compared her voice to overhearing someone on a bus talking about a rectal exam. Hope you don’t mind me repeating this horrible claim but I was sickened. Maybe I should have hit the abuse button but, of course, I didn’t. I wonder why a conservative man would say that about a conservative woman? Why would a person even think such a thing.
Some Bachmann supporters are discussing why conservative women are treated like a dog by some on FR. It is extremely sad how much gutter talk has been taking place to a very good conservative christian person. It is so repulsive that it makes me ill. I would not want my daughter to get into politics if her life depended on it. I would not want my wife either. Conservative women are treated like pond scum. It is just not right. Palin/Bachmann 2012. I was hoping one or the other, but heck with it. They both DESERVE to be on the ticket together.
It’s fem-I-nazi, not fem-A-nazi, Dopey...er, I mean Dusty. I don’t usually correct people’s spelling but since you pushed the PMS button I thought I’d mention it.
Interestingly, it is Rush himself (as well as Mark Levin and Sean Hannity) who have been the biggest boosters of female candidates. I love those guys. Real men; not girly men.
Well, that's one way to get your point across, I guess. It's a stupid point, and not true, and apparently you don't know the difference between a lay-off and a firing, but you've been unreasonable all thread, so why stop now?
I'm sorry I repeated that awful comment about MB but I thought you'd understand. I was also hoping that some other people would read it and understand what's going on here at FR.
Without scrolling down, I'll bet anyone $100 that she is going to post again in this thread. Any takers?
Because accusing people posting about Bachmann’s gaffe of hating women isn’t disgusting, right?
You at least used to be reasonable.
