You have to wonder at the term “anti-intellectual” as well.

It works well as a trick. Legion are the libs who say 'anti-intellectuals' should be careful lest they wind up with a heart surgeon or a structural engineer with an instant degree from a diploma mill.

The funny thing is, they're rarely called on it. What their "highly educated" trope ignores is the fact that mainstream political opinions in the liberal-arts faculty would likely be laughed out of the engineering faculty.

Every human being has flaws and frailties.

That said: I might not be willing to vote for someone who is “appealing” to Conservatives, but may in fact NOT BE as Conservative as their appeal.

I won’t be conned.

He is very self-controlled, but in a natural way. That said, I laughed heartily during the debates because his facial expressions say what he is thinking but not saying.

On an aside, even that idiot Bob Beckel said tonight on The Five that he thought it would be a Perry/Rubio ticket (he mentioned a Romney/Rubio ticket also, but Romney will never beat Perry).

A Perry/Rubio ticket would devastate Obama.

I am feeling optimistic again about the future and about our great country.

“Tea Party” and true Conservatives should be the last people in the country jumping on anyone’s bandwagon this early; should be the last people contributing to public opinion polls creating the “front runner” status of anyone, and should be the most demanding on full discovery of who is running.

Right now, in nearly every way, Mr. Perry seems to be playing by the GWBush play-book - cut off debate on who is the “front runner” as fast as possible (which provides for the least internal, within the party examination of that “front runner”).

Call me jaded.

Many posters on FR list their ‘requirements’ for a candidate that only Jesus Christ Himself could fulfill.

Anyone less is not worthy of consideration (except their particular favorite, that is!).

Ten years as Texas governor has given Perry the opportunity to make many mistakes and for his opponents to dig up all the dirt they want.

And this is the best they have?

C’mon, man....

But it is the Christian values in him that holds him back. It’s not just his self control...he has values and isn’t going to lash out like Bachmann did. He knows better. He also isn’t going to walk away from a debate looking like a nasty, hateful person. Like Bachmann did...and Mitten looked like the slimeball he is.

What is Perry doing that is cutting anyone off?

But if he is, isn't that smart? Why would he want to have a long, drawn out campaign with half a dozen competitors?

The reality is that each candidate is doing themselves in like Paul, Huntsman, and Bachman have done.

Santorum was never viable, and most agree that Newt (the most articulate and intellectual of the bunch) has too much baggage.

Cain, my personal favorite, won't get enough support to beat Perry and although I like his background and experience, I'm not sure he will know his way around government like Perry does.

Romney is only a clothespin, ABO candidate for me.

I think that in a few weeks you'll get on the bandwagon.

“Ten years as Texas governor has given Perry the opportunity to make many mistakes and for his opponents to dig up all the dirt they want.”

It is not “mistakes” - everything happens for a reason in politics - it’s choices.

Our choices betray whether we “error” (mistake) because we have certain principles and are keeping with them, and defending what we have decided because of them, while possibly creating some political heat for ourselves, or are we really not very principled and looking for any means to “success” - “popularity”, with those with whom we are seeking either support or “compromise” (ours or theirs??).

We need a Conservative willing to govern like Obama - a man who is guided primarily by his principles (his flawed Marxist principles) even when his actions - based on those principles - are not winning for him a popularity contest.

Mr. Obama is not like so-called Conservative RINOs, whose principles are often neither dear nor deep.

Which one is Perry - a successful Conservative, or a merely successful politician who has managed to appeal to, and built that success on an appeal to, Conservatives?

Give me a Conservative POTUS who may even be a one-term POTUS while leaving an outstanding Conservative record, over a RINO who is looking at his re-election in every action he takes. Which one would Perry be?

Neither Perry nor anyone else has yet answered that for me.

Yes of course. I should have been clearer.

In giving one's life to Christ, one's self becomes infused with the desire to obey Him. The self is replaced by Love of the Father/Son/Holy Spirit.

Hence, self-control becomes a loving display of obedience.

“But if he is, isn’t that smart?”

The question is not whether or not it is “smart”, but smart for whom? It may be smart for Mr. Perry, but, in my opinion it is NOT smart for the Republican party and its need to do a superior job of vetting its POTUS candidate this time.

“Anyone but Obama” may be a good campaign slogan, but for the GOP to buy just anyone on that idea will not serve the GOP or Conservatives over the next decade - truly Conservative policies and only truly Conservative policies will.

When Bush was governor, he had a purple state legislature.

Perry was elected and now has a solid red legislature.

Cause and effect? Coincidence?

Texas is producing more new jobs than anyone else?

Coincidence?

Really? Really?

If you are a candidate and can (ethically) eliminate the competition and seal the deal for yourself, wouldn’t you?

Political consultants have been successful in talking conservatives out of being conservative in their campaigns. They use the polling results to tell them they must chase the mushy middle. That has never worked but they still keep trying to peddle that idea. When conservatives run as conservatives they win.

Look at talk radio. Almost all the successful programs are conservative. What better poll does one need?

I kinda think he allowed her to set herself up. People think oh he didn’t defend himself...actually, he did. Then when he saw her go into launcy rant, he stepped back...and let her rip.

I want to point out that both the web title and URL of the article are very different from its published title: “Perry casts himself as anti-intellectual, says life shaped by faith“.

This should be a scandal. That is will only be noticed or read by a dozens tells us where we are and why the phrase "enemedia" exists.

Oh, yeah! That’s the ticket! He set up Bachmann to talk about his campaign donations and wacky executive orders! Why didn’t I think of that?!
