Will that even work with the hybrids?

Yes. Most of my tomato varieties are heirlooms, but one was a volunteer from the compost heap last year that didn’t match any variety we recognized, so I’m assuming it was a natural hybrid. It did so well that last fall I took a cutting from it, nursed it through the winter, and used it for cuttings in the spring.
