Heather Burcham died in 2007 when she was 31. Cervical cancer killed her. She was misdiagnosed at age 26, and by the time she knew she had cancer, it was too late for effective treatment.
But she changed lives by living hers so passionately.
She was deeply religious, quick-witted, loving, with a quirky sense of humor; and she was determined to save other young women. Her passion for a cause made her a "Person of the Week" on ABC's "World News" program in 2007. Heather likely would have been shouting from the rooftops in frustration, listening to the current political debate about the HPV vaccine.
For her, the HPV vaccine was about saving lives, not politics, not campaign donations. She probably would have been heartbroken to hear Texas Gov. Rick Perry backtrack from his commitment to have girls vaccinated against cervical cancer.
Perry made her the poster child for his HPV executive decision, and spoke eloquently at her funeral. What a difference four years later as he debates the topic with other Republican candidates.
Her words to ABC News in 2007 still resonate, in light of the current debate in which this one face of the disease has been lost amid the political rhetoric.
"I don't want to have died in vain," she said. "I don't want my life to have no purpose whatsoever, and if I can help spread the word about cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine, then I haven't lived in vain."

Your comment implies that all cervical cancers caught earlier can be cured.
They are not. Too many die even when caught early and get the most effective forms of treatment.
But those that don't get cancer in the first place, don't die from cancer. The vaccine isn't 100% effective, but it is nearly 100%.
So he did it “For the children”?? how nice
BINGO, she died from poor medical care, and Perry got his $29,000.
By using the term “corrupt pile of slime..” to describe Perry, it is obvious that he/she is a dem.
“Proof?”

All it takes is a kiss. Or less.
Even worse, I now hear he pimped for Rooty.
Nanny state authoritarians stick together.
I have to wonder how Perry could support a goverment funded abortion candidate.
Enjoy!
Of course and so can stupidity if you go the public laundry wrap a pair of skivvies around your head and do a perfect swan dive off the top floor of the building.
Actually the truth is the Cult of Perry would excuse ANY action by him because of their blind idolization of the guy.
NO Conservative should EVER be comfortable with the notion that a Government official, no matter how well intended, can mandate things be injected into children without the parent's prior consent.
Any rational adult should be seriously disturbed by what Perry did here. Conservative should be the last people advocating the power of Government overrides the parent's authority.
It is especially absurd of said "conservatives" to attempt to cloak their white washing of Perry in a phony libertarian cant.
Perry's actions here are more in line with something 0 would do then what Reagan would of done.
It utterly intellectually indefensible for the same people who claim to be "for limited Government" to turn right around an try to white wash Perry's corrupt attempt to massively expand his authority.
The FDA has not pulled Gardisil from the market, and there is zero causation that has been found in clinical trials making Gardisil directly responsible for any deaths.
Do you know what it takes to get a drug approved by the FDA? Any idea what post-market analysis is, either?
What an arrogant, callous attitude.
This vaccine prevents infection from the 2 HPV strains that cause 70% of cervical cancers.
Fixed it for you.
I thought Palin possibly getting in to the race was enough for me to wait and see what dynamic she might bring to the contest. Since she is not running after looking at everyone else I support Perry. He is not perfect but he is worlds better than Obama. Another factor is that I have been stunned by some of the support Perry has received from people that are very concerned about the country. Some people that I know well and I would never believe would support someone like Perry. These people are Democrats. Rich ones. The election this week for penisboys seat in New York is NOT a unique event! It is a new standard! Obama has lost and is losing the support of monied Democrats. That is why he is pushing this jobs bill. He will not get the money support from the well-to-do Democrats like he did before. No matter if they be Jewish or Black or Brown. Unless they get federal money for some reason they are going to keep their money in their pockets. Along with their votes.
Obama must grease the unions to get part of the grease back in to his campaign. That is the sole purpose of the "jobs" bill. He knows and his campaign knows that they have had a lot of their big money Democrats turn on them. They may get a few token dollars but not the big bucks. These Democrats have figured out that Obama is out to pick their pockets too.
I've never seen anything like I have seen this week regarding Democrats who are turning away from Obama. Some Democrats that I have known for years and who were rabid about Obama are pissed. And I'm not talking a little pissed. I believe that right now there are more and more of these Democrats getting on the wave that is moving away from Obama.
The Democrats only hope is to dump Obama for another candidate. The odds of that are slim to none....
So far, more than 35 million in the US have decided otherwise.
You can still get cervical cancer whether or not you take this vaccine!
Yes, it only stops the strains that cause 70% of cervical cancer. And it is not not 100%, just nearly 100% effective for those strains.
I'm sure the families of the thousands per year that die from those strains would agree with you.
You’re embarrassing yourself in this thread with your lack of knowledge.
I actually feel bad for you.

“By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have been infected with genital HPV infection.”
The missed diagnosis is a red herring. There aren’t a lot of missed diagnosis situations involving polio anymore. And there have been many on these threads implying and saying that proper morals is all you need to save you getting exposed to the HPV virus. Its untrue, makes conservatives look like the Jehovah Witness types who refuse medical care, and costs us votes.
Honest people can think Perrito is a poor choice as i do. Oppose mandates,, fair enough. But please everybody,, don’t make us look stupid by acting like HPV is somehow in the same class as syphilis.
