Residents in and around the Southland and southwest US Wednesday reported seeing a series of strange lights up in the sky.
Viewers described shooting lights, with many colors, including many reports saying the object or objects had a tail.
The first reports came from Riverside County. Within a half hour of the first reports, several Orange County residents also reported seeing the lights. After about an hour, reports were coming from all over the West.
Most say the lights are blue and green. A few described the lights as yellow or orange.
CBS2 and KCAL9 first received emails and phone calls from Murrieta, Perris, Irvine, Ontario, Riverside, Lake Forest, Corona and San Clemente.
Additionally, police also report they have gotten many calls wondering what the lights are.
UPDATE: (8:30 p.m.): Some residents of Arizona have reported seeing the lights as well.
UPDATE: (8:52 p.m.): Residents of Nevada, many in Las Vegas, are also reporting the green-blue lights in the sky.
UFOs? Several days ago, NASA announced a dead satellite would fall to Earth by Septembers end but so far, no official confirmation if the lights and satellite are linked.
Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service says the object was probably a meteor. The director of the Griffith Observatory concurred. Ed Krupp told us that what was seen tonight was likely a piece of interplanetary debris that passed through the Earths atmosphere and burned up.
He added, This kind of thing happens about once a year, or once every few years.
Some viewer and eyewitness accounts follow:
Anonymous: I was on my cell outside, in City of industry when I looked up and saw the green, orange falling object about 7:40 p.m. As I saw it my buddy was on his way home on the 91 and he saw it at the same time.
Bernadette: I live in Quartz Hill. It was green in color and very large.
Francesa D: I live in Chino it looked like a falling star at first and continued on forever with a reddish green tail behind it before it was too low to see anymore.
Chasen H: I was on the 405 South and saw a bright light in the east. I thought it was a helicopter with its searchlight on but saw it aim downward, turn green and streak towards the ground. I was at the Carson/Harbor Gateway border at the time.
Terr: I am in south Ontario. My daughter and I were in the driveway as we saw the fiery yellow and orange falling. We thought maybe it was a firework of some sort. But wasnt. It was very bright and pretty big in size. We lost sight of it behind trees.
I would guess either the Meteor or the Cameraman were drunk.
I’ll bite. Who says they’re trying to be stealthy in the first place?
Amish buggies run amok.
Seems like I remember reading about some satellite getting ready to fall out of orbit any time now...
Maybe the fines for running without lights are really high in California.
None of these video links are remotely close to what I saw here in Phoenix, I am 2 miles south and east of the Cardinals stadium. I dont have audio on my computer and would be curious to know what direction these were taken from the LA Area, they are about the same time as what I saw fly by that seemed like it came from directly west of Phoenix flew across the sky south of the valley and disappeared (appearing to split) way South of us, guessing East of Tucson. It was VERY low on the horizon, Barely above the final flight path of sky harbor, when I first saw it, just above the tops of South Mountain from my vantage point, It looked like a HUGE glowing green firework and we all saw the same yellowish propulsion type sparks coming out the back of it. Looked like a bottle rocket that would have had to been about the size of an apollo rocket... all three of us were waiting for the BANG... and laughed saying it must have been a dud... We thought this was just something low and close by here when we saw it, now that I am realizing the scale of this, the above references are mentioned for directional purposes only, because east of Tucson is probably more like gulf of Mexico in reality...
I'm NOT saying they would be trying to be stealthy at all. I'm saying if UFOs came from other planets what would be the use of colored lights? Why would they install them in the first place?
What people are seeing is more likely military testing or natural phenomena, not alien spacecraft.
Flares.
Undoubtedly weather balloons.
Wonder how many of those reporting seeing the lights are medical marijuana users? /sar
“Different elements, calcium, for instance, will burn green.”
calcium like is in milk?
maybe it was the cow in re-entry after jumping over the moon
Same as the use of colored lights on planes, to tell nearby things “I’m here!”.
... ... ...
Aren't you glad... I obliged ya?
