1. Could they have pulled it off?
2. Was the 50,000 figure accurate for the early 1960s?

If they had some operatives already employed at the target stores, they probably could have pulled it off.
Otherwise moving in 500 kilos of explosives might have drawn some attention.

Even if the number isn't accurate for Macys of the 1960s, the population of NY was considerable even then. Add in the number of targets and 50,000 probably isn't far off from the numbers potentially at risk.
This is good history to know any time we see a young idiot wearing a Che t-shirt.
