NEW YORK (AP) -- Republicans have scored an upset victory in a House race that became a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic policies.

Retired media executive and political novice Bob Turner defeated Democratic state Assemblyman David Weprin in a special election Tuesday to succeed Rep. Anthony Weiner, a seven-term Democrat who resigned in June after a sexting scandal.

I confess. I was totally wrong and swore NY was as nuts as ever. Thank God, I was wrong.

Is this truly the end of Weiner jokes?

This district is heavily if not predominantly Jewish. Team Obama has to be sweating bullets in the White House tonight.

After 90 years that district elected a Republican, so it’s obvious how well entrenched the Dem machine is there, and in this case, to no avail. Mazel tov!

Maybe in another 100 years, after a majority of Democrats are voted out of/thrown out of office.

Yes, but Weiner is still a joke.

There were many New York freepers who worked very hard to get out the vote. I’m so proud of them!

This Turner who won will likely be termed a “RINO” here soon enough. If not, he won’t be reelected. That’s just the district. We can have a ‘moderate’ Republican or an off-the-charts liberal Dem out of the Schumer/Weiner mold. Take your pick.

Yep, Turner fought hard, but the competition wasn't very stiff.

Does this mean the Bam is free to throw Israel under the bus at the UN siding with the Palestinians for a forced statehood?

I heard it said that the winner of this race would only have the seat through 2012 because the district would disappear in the redistricting.

Who can’t wait to see what Chrissy Tingles and Fat Ed will say tomorrow. Like many Libs did in 2010,they will blame the economy. it had nothing to do with Butthead Obama.

I agree. I don’t care if Turner is a RINO. He took the congressional seat of Geraldine Ferraro, Chuck Schumer and Weiner. That is a big deal and needs to be celebrated. We’ve shut down one of the Dems major seats of power in the House.
