Phil Tetlock and Barbara Mellers were in a race against time to save their 15-year-old daughter, Jenny. As I reported last summer, Jenny developed a degenerative muscle disease nearly two years ago, soon after being vaccinated against the cervical-cancer-causing HPV. She became nearly completely paralyzed, though her mind was perfectly intact and she could still enjoy her pet parakeet, Hannah Montana, and Twilight.
I've been E-mailing Phil regularly over the past year, and up until our last E-mail, one week ago, he had been holding out hope that they would be able to find a cure for his daughteror to at least determine if the human papillomavirus vaccine called Gardasil had caused his daughter's illness, most likely a juvenile form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's disease). Sadly, the clock ran out last Sunday, and Jenny passed away.

In the extensive clinical studies (on more than 20,000 girls and women) that were performed prior to the FDAs licensing of the vaccine, the vaccine was 100 percent effective, a virtually unprecedented result. How safe is the vaccine? No serious side effects were detected; the most common side effect is soreness, redness and swelling in the arm at the site of the injection. In summary, Gardasil has one of the most favorable risk-benefit ratios of any pharmaceutical.

I also guess you would think that the Polio and Small Pox vaccines were dangerous. Hit Perry on the mandate, which is not the way to do anything, but let's get some education on the actual vaccine.
Listening to Bachmann repeat all her wildeyed charges last night was like nails on a blackboard. She’s toast.
This is pure claptrap.
The author herself says there is no evidence that Guardasil was responsible for the ALS.
Which is it?
Absent conclusive evidence of a link, the allegation is completely unfounded. There have been over 50 million doses of Gardisil dispensed. To state a link is absurd, scientifically speaking.
Why are you defending him? By passing this Executive Order, Perry not only bypassed the Texas Legislature, but more importantly, he rode roughshod over the right of parents to decide what's best for their children. He had no right and no reason to do this. It amounted to tyranny. Do we want yet another tyrant in charge of all 50 states?
Bachmann is an idiot.
I for one don’t trust the FDA.Beyond the fact that there is evidence that this drug could be dangerous is the fact that a the executive order was used to push this through. It is forced on the parents to get there children this vaccine. Which there seems to be evidence it is dangerous. I know there was an opt-out. I’m sure many parents did know that was an option. Why not make it opt-in instead? I just think this whole thing is an overreach of government. Im sure many evangelical Christians will agree with me that a vaccine for there 12 year old for a disease that is transmitted sexually is a no go! Perry apparently does not understand this
so is it now banned by the CDC or the FDA ?
Of course not. Those agencies are responsible for the maintainance of pharma profits, not patient health.
You seem to be under the misapprehension that the FDA and others do not do follow up safety studies. They do. I posted the National Cancer Institute's statement, here's the CDC's:
There are two licensed HPV vaccines, Gardasil® and Cervarix®, available to protect against the types of HPV infection that cause most cervical cancers. Gardasil® was licensed for use in females, age 9-26 years in June 2006 and for males age 9-26 years in Oct 2009. Cervarix® was licensed for use in females age 10-25 in October 2009.The safety of HPV vaccines was studied in clinical trials worldwide before licensure. For Gardasil® , over 29,000 males and females participated in these trials. For Cervarix®, over 30,000 females participated in several clinical trials.
Since licensure, CDC and FDA have been closely monitoring the safety of HPV vaccines
Based on all of the information we have today, CDC recommends HPV vaccination for the prevention of most types of cervical cancer. As with all approved vaccines, CDC and FDA will continue to closely monitor the safety of HPV vaccines. Any problems detected with these vaccines will be reported to health officials, healthcare providers, and the public and needed action will be taken to ensure the public's health and safety.

All vaccines have certain risks, but maybe not this one.
That is why I choose not to vaccinate my 14 year old twin daughters with this vaccine because there is no upside to it. There is nothing to be gained because my girls are celibate.
One of my daughters has lots of medical issues (brain injury, seizures, heart arrhythmia). I talked to her cardiologist about this vaccine and she even said why risk it at this point.
I remember a lot of hysteria over the MMR &, later, the chickenpox vaccines. Not so much anymore & those vaccines are still being used.
The EO was the only real issue.
Perry himself said it was wrong and it was struck down.
What more do you want from him on the matter?
Obama has been a trillion times worse and his legislation still stands.
BTW is is hard to “actually govern” for a decade without stepping in something or other.
Maybe you should add Rick Perry to your tagline.
After all, a popular conservative candidate on FR is a liberal republican that people make excuses for.
Except that children don't get HPV sitting next to someone in class. Whether kids get this vaccine should be solely up to parents. Government needs to butt out.

Did he bypass the Legislature? Yes. Was there any sinister, tyrannical intent behind it? No.
I have reasons to scrutinize Perry as a potential nominee. This issue isn't one of them.
IT IS!
There are school systems “requesting” that kids get this vaccine. Parents should make it abundantly clear to them that it should never be mandatory. You know as well as I do that government will push if they believe they can get away with it.
