When Rick Perry threw his hat into the ring for the Republican presidential nomination, it set off such a collective cringe among liberal Texans that it likely scored on the Richter scale. Being a native Texan with basic respect for modern civilisation means living in a constant state of low-grade humiliation, as the state's size provides an interrupted stream of news stories highlighting the cranks and Bible-thumpers who win state and local offices but a presidential campaign means exponentially expanding the amount of national and international attention paid to the streak of mean-spirited ignorance that rules Texas politics. With Rick Perry, this means a whole lot more coverage of the fact that Texas is the "killingest" state in the entire union, having executed more than four times as many prisoners as the next contender in this gruesome contest.
Of course, we of the non-barbaric sort do hope that all this attention paid to Rick Perry's willingness to execute anyone on death row no matter how obviously screwed over by an imperfect and often unjust judicial system could somehow provoke enough national shame that we actually do away with the death penalty. Which we really need to do, not because we have any great love for vicious murderers, but because the death penalty is a known destroyer of a fair and sober-minded justice system.

Amanda Marcotte is a feminist Texan who has horribly relocated to my state. She is famous for being one of the leaders of the lynch mob against the Duke Lacrosse team. Her Wikipedia entry is a horror story.
We watch the news in our shop every morning before work and at lunch. Executions are one of the top stories, and one of the guys (black guy) usually says, “Bet he don’t do that again”. Cracks me up every time.
To wit: Go for it Amanda ...the death penalty is more ghastly than murder. I can understand murder. How a civilised society calmly puts to death a fit , unwilling person ...this escapes me.
What is ghastly is that this person probably votes...
See what I mean? The fun never stops at The Guardian. I love the remark: “...unwilling person...” How dare we put to death an UNWILLING kind of brutal, vile murderer. Seriously, they have some of the stupidest people over there. Brits AND Americans.
Does this idiot woman and the meatheads who agree with her in the comments section, seriously believe that Rick Perry himself is executing people in Texas? Or is not stopping an execution the same as killing in their minds?
Did these people complain when Bill KKKlinton made a special trip to Arkansas to oversee the execution of Ricky Ray Rector, a man who was intellectually impaired?
Apparently.
Perry is personally gunning them down like dogs.
Actually, Perry can only postpone for 30 days.
He doesn't hardly ever do it. Why should he?
Really!
She is whacked but that’s Austin. Same as San Jose or San Francisco, where I am from.
But, I will say, a good number of O supporters are completely disillusioned with him and I don’t think he is going to find the amount of support or turnout required to hold the White House.
He’s toast.
Unfortunately, she is now NEW YORK. And she just loved Anthony Weiner during the scandal. This from a woman who had just relocated and knew next to nothing about my home town. Infuriating!!
Ron White was one of the funniest commedians to come along in quite a while.....I heard him say to the audience one time that a lot of parents have brought their children and he said his routines are not for children...he can be a little raw for children....
