Perry repeatedly found himself in the crosshairs, as the field of candidates took turns attacking his positions on illegal immigration, Social Security, and his controversial 2007 push to vaccinate Texas schoolgirls against human papillomavirus, a common sexually transmitted that can lead to cervical cancer. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, whose standing among Republicans has slipped dramatically since Perry entered the race, said she was "offended" by Perry's executive order, which included an opt-out provision for parents who did not want the vaccine.

this vaccine was a federal program with tons of oversight and was more than likely a loss for the drug company.
non one makes money on a federal vaccine program.
WHAT?! Oh, you LIE!!! Evidence please!!!!
she’s just getting desperate. She’ll never get her campaign debt paid off and will certainly never be the nominee.
The weesil went to bed on his lie. What a coward.
- You can't build a wall/fence from Texas to California. (The 15th century Ming Dynasty didn't get that memo!)
- Texas doesn't deny in-state tuition based on how your last name sounds. (Ah, so that's how they award tuition scholarships in Texas... based on how yer last name sounds, pard'ner!)
- It was either in-state tuition for those student or putting them on the Dole. (What kind of an either/or choice is that, as if notifying ICE was not an option?)
‘non one makes money on a federal vaccine program.”
Shows just how stupid you are. The companies lobbying for the program just happened to make it. They make $360 for each dose.
shazaaam
screw you
Its been well documented. Do your own damn research.
Medicine should be between you and you doctor. The only exception is communicably diseases which are a danger to the public. I don’t want the government telling me or mine what care we can, can’t or must have. Maybe you want Obama/Romney care, but I don’t.
What does it matter if there’s an opt out for the vaccine? So next year they rescind the opt out and we have govt controlling the sex lives of 12 year olds. It is wrong morally to impose it, period.
Also, the real travesty is Perry obviously spent very little time studying Gardisil, which is not a vaccine against cancer. Stop saying it prevents cancer like you’re a hero. Gardisal prevents the growth of a MINORITY of Human Papilloma Viruses (about 8 of over 30) that can cause CERVICAL Cancer, which is almost always detected by a yearly pap smear and removed by a cone biopsy. We are not talking cancer like chemo, radiation, etc, except it the most vastly rare cases. Yet the risks of the vaccine are greater than those probabilities.
I’m not saying some women don’t get cervical cancer and die from it, particularly if they do not have check-ups, but that it’s deceiving these women to tell them Gardisal will prevent it. It won’t.
All these federal programs have strange built in requirements.
This program was geared for the large Hispanic and Black demographics near the border areas.
The program had an opt out.
That’s lame. Those are vaccinations for diseases that are contagious! It’s a public safety issue in the schools to prevent virulent childhood diseases. Irrelevant comparison.
That’s a lie.
So who are you pretending to support now ???
If there is any blame it should be on Merck. No one was aware of the horrific side effects of this vaccine. My granddaughters pediatrician was adamant that they have the vaccine. It seemed a wonder drug... until the truth was revealed. Fortunately they did not suffer any of the side effects.
I don’t think this was about the money on Perry’s part. I don’t think he was trying to find a “way out”, I think he was trying to relay his motives. He has repeatedly said he was wrong.
Agreed, the state’s administration of Gardasil will not be an issue in the general election. Everyone is shooting at Perry as the front runner, which is fair game.
It’s a non issue for me. If I was a Texas resident I simply wouldn’t have allowed my children to take part and I would have been very vocal about it.
What a joke that so many are looking for the “perfect” GOP candidate. Not going to happen. Rick Perry is as close as it gets to a strong conservative candidate without tunnel vision. My Perry bumper sticker stays on my car.
He should issue whatever executive orders for the good of the people that he deems to be for the good of the people. Assuming they are legally within his power to do so.
