F-16 Jets Shadow Passenger Plane Headed to Detroit, 3 Detained

The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement that the report Sunday afternoon prompted NORAD officials to send F-16 jets to shadow the flight until it landed safely in Detroit -- a step the agency said was taken "out of an abundance of caution."

NORAD: Military jets called to escort flight to NYC

Associated Press (AP) — A NORAD spokesman says two military aircraft were dispatched to intercept an American Airlines flight bound for New York from Los Angeles after a report of a disturbance.

Flight 34 landed safely after 4 p.m. Sunday. The nature of the incident was unclear but a law enforcement official says it isn’t thought to be terrorism.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. The official says three passengers locked themselves in the bathroom and were still inside when the plane landed.

The FBI is responding to Kennedy Airport.

A spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command says confirmed the military aircraft intercepted the flight about 100 miles west of New York and shadow it until it landed.

Three passengers, two men and a woman, were taken off the flight in handcuffs. They have since been released, and no charges will be filed. They have not been identified.

So, passengers are now supposed to wait in their seats until... what?

1. Three suspicious-acting people locked in the restroom finish mixing their separate reagents they smuggled aboard to make an explosive and detonate the primer;

2. The sky marshall finished texting Janet Incompetano what to do, and is still waiting for a reply;

3. One of the F-16s is ordered to blow the plane up rather than have it approach a major city;

4. The captain requests the passengers aid the flight attendants in removing the occupants from the restroom and rendering them incapable of further suspicious activities; or

5. Everyone just sits on their thumbs, chewing their cud, and pretend nothing is happening, until the plane lands and the seatbelt sign has been turned off so they can exit.

Very weird day... being we are all thinking about the attacks and where we were that day a decade ago.
I got a bit worried sometime around 2PM EST when 2 A-10's went over my house @ around 2000ft... heading to downtown Indianapolis... with a heading of about 030 instead of toward the airport (around 290).
This isn't usual activity around here but at this point I have to assume it was some sort of ceremonial thing or something. Still gave me a pretty uneasy feeling when I heard them go over and stepped out to see what the heck was going on... nothing ever fly's in that direction and very rarely that low.
