While addressing college students in Richmond, VA, President Obama was surprised to learn that schools use trailers, also called 'modular buildings' or 'modular classrooms.' During his visit Obama said he was approached by an educator who mentioned she teaches in a trailer. Obama did not mention that the teacher had a problem with her situation, but he made it clear this was unacceptable.
"I just -- in the back, I was taking some photos with folks who had helped out to organize this event, and there was a young lady who is a teacher. And she said, I heard your speech last night. I really appreciate it. Im teaching eighth grade English, and I teach in a trailer. We shouldnt have people teaching in trailers. We shouldnt have kids learning in trailers. They should have classrooms with Internet and science labs," President Obama said to the college crowd.
The practice of using trailers is quite common at public schools and more often than not the accommodations in the modular buildings are better than classrooms inside the the main building. These modular buildings are used for several different reasons including for temporary purposes. For example, while the building or a classroom is being renovated the school may opt for a trailer until the improvements are completed. Ironically, renovating classrooms and schools is something Obama is pushing for in his this new stimulus bill.

he must be really shocked and upset that people live their entire lives in a trailer (preferably a double-wide).
I sold my McMansion in 2006 and bought an old double-wide on 6 acres in the woods with the profit. Now that Im out of work, its great to actually own my house; even if it is a trailer. When I move, assuming I get a next job, Ill rent it. I feel like an idiot that I bought houses all those decades and never owned one. I spent my last five working years putting 25% of my pre-tax income into investments. (Of course, I got my clock cleaned by the Obama economy, but my own-a-trailer-invest-your-income idea is still a sound strategy.)
This everybody MUST own a McMansion attitude has been terribly bad for the economy. My double-wide has been perfect and in many ways is superior lay-out-wise to a house.
I believe this is a planted question! obamma is good at doing this.
Note the secret serviceman in the background. Were they afraid one of the kids may have brought a Roy Rogers pistol to school?
For a minute I thought this was satire. I’d bet there are schools in Chicago where he “wuz ah cumunity oganizer” that had schools with trailers / modular classrooms.
Me too....this asscramp is completely out of touch.
The same thing happened at the school my daughter teaches at. New school last year and some portables this year.
The 535 million he laundered through Solybvra could have built several hundred state of the art PC buikdings at shools.
Each with high speed wifi access, filled with ipad 2’s, iphone4’s wified to to rows of PCs running i7’s and 500 gig SSDs’.
I'm happy to report that she doesn't teach in a trailer any longer.
This year, all of the trailers have officially been declared "learning annexes" by the school district.
When in school we knew the test were about to be given. The smell of the blue line press machines permeate the building.
There is no need for heavy capital investment in new school buildings for minor changes in enrollment. Of course, not all school districts think this way. Five miles away from our school district is Harrisburg School District. They are $580 million in debt for new schools. Harrisburg has declining enrollment in their schools. But, eighty percent of their graduates are illiterates as indicated by standardized tests. The worse of it, all of you pay for Harrisburg schools. They are heavily subsidized by state and federal government. Of course, Harrisburg is where Obama’s base lives.
Good thing it wasn’t a Vega.
I’m beginning to see the logic myself.
I was informed otherwise, but honestly, after seeing how the other side lives, there’s much to be gained.
“Id bet there are schools in Chicago where he wuz ah cumunity oganizer that had schools with trailers / modular classrooms.”
I’d wager he never was a community organizer at all.
Every day Barry shows us a new side of his stupidity. Remember when he railed about the price of arugula?
During the 1960’s and 1970’s I had many of my grade school, high school, and college classes in trailers or portables. My high school used portables for all of it’s science classes which kept the smell of chemicals out of the main school. They also used them for many other classes including health, English and social studies. My children’s elementary, middle, and high schools from 1999 through the present day have all used portables and trailers as well.
Almost always the portables and trailers have been nicer classrooms than the actual school buildings and those classrooms were actually quite coveted by the teachers that had them, since they were far quieter than the ones in the main school, allowing students to concentrate better on their work.
Where the hell was Obama when I was working? I was stuck in a little cubicle between two chatty chicks who ultimately required surgery to have their phone receivers removed from their ears........
Your area too? I don't begrudge the kids a clean and decent environment, but some schools are "must have fancy stuff". "What do we need to educate them" pops up later.
And they have air conditioners that work.
Apparently Obama doesn’t know that many schools already have Internet and science labs (usually in several separate classrooms, but not every classroom). Our school district not only has them, but they also have several sets of portable computers that can be checked out by any teacher for their entire classroom when needed. All the classrooms already have 2-10 computers in every classroom depending on the grade level and the school libraries also have 4-24 computers for student use.
Many of these computers were donated to the schools too!
Oh heavens. Whatever shall we do.
