Loyalist forces of dictator Muammar Gaddafi have started a counter-offensive to retake the Red Valley region near their stronghold Sirte, a spot that the Libyan rebels claimed to have conquered a day earlier.
Gaddafi forces are reported to have fired rockets and artillery shells to recapture Red Valley, 60 km east of Sirte, and one of the lines of defense for the Gaddafi troops in Sirte, Al Jazeera reported.
The even though the rebel government, the Transitional National Council in Libya, announced the capture of Red Valley on Thursday, sporadic fighting continued on Friday morning.
The fighting near another one of Gaddafi's last remaining bastions -- the town of Bani Walid, a dusty town of 100 000 some 140 km southeast of Tripoli -- is continuing with varying success for the two parties, with the dictator's loyalists firing rockets.
The Transitional National Council has been in talks with Libyan tribal elders for their forces to enter Qaddafi's hometown of Sirte and the loyalist-held towns of Bani Walid and Sabha but the appear to have achieved little as the rebel forces are reported to be amassing for a push against Sirte and Bani Walid.

... a caliphate is not built in a day.
I would not want one. It just seems too much of a gimmick. The Kabars are pretty much the standard but I never thought they were any better than other high quality such as the Cold Steel SRK.
To top it off they are pretty reasonable. I ordered a Swiss bayonet from CDNN and it looks very similar to the old Gerber Guardian. It is basically a long blade resembling the old Sykes-Fairbairne but with a longer blade and not quite as thin a point. I figure since it was made by Sig/Neuhausen that the quality would be first class. The only thing I don’t like about it is the handle tho with finger holds, is slippery metal. I simply wrapped it with several layers of athletic tape.
Oops, wrong thread.
I wish I’d just read the thread, I tried for a couple of minutes to figure out what that was in response to by looking at my posts page. ;’) Anyway, glad you’re happy with your purchase.
That war is far from over.
It’s true — NATO won’t be around to run sorties and interdict shipping forever. If it could, it would have taken care of the Somalian pirates by now (more Muzzies).
