The Next 9/11 — A Nuclear One?
IBD Editorials ^ | September 9, 2011 | Staff

Posted on 09/09/2011 5:22:26 PM PDT by Kaslin

National Security: The Sept. 11 commission stated that our biggest failure was one of imagination. Imagine an Iranian nuclear device detonating high over the American heartland. They're working on it.

On the same day the 9/11 Commission issued its report, another commission issued a report on a threat that could change our world and way of life in ways we can scarcely imagine. It is a real and credible threat, and it is largely being ignored.

The threat is a phenomenon known as electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, and demonstrates why the issue of homeland security extends beyond the need for body scanners or taking our shoes off at the airport. It's why ignoring Iran is dangerous and why a robust national missile defense should be of the highest priority.

This threat to our national security was the subject of study by the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack, established by unanimous consent of the House and Senate. Released on the same day as the 9/11 Commission report, few paid attention.

It is a scenario worthy of Hollywood, but it is a frighteningly real possibility. A solitary ballistic missile, perhaps an ICBM launched by a decaying North Korean regime or an Iranian mullah, or a terrorist Scud launched from a ship off the Atlantic Coast carrying the first Islamic nuke, detonates its warhead 25 to 300 miles above the U.S. mainland.

Nobody is harmed or killed immediately by the blast. But life in America, the world's only superpower and largest economy, comes to a screeching halt as a country dependent on 21st-century technology regresses almost a century instantaneously.

A 125 miles up would do the trick.

Exactly. You could launch it from any location, as long as your launch vehicle could deliver it to the proper DETONATION location and that might be 250 miles up over the mid-USA.

Then all you need to do is to detonate. No more launching necessary when it is in location as the article seems to imply you would need to do.

Poor writing in the story and the poster did not seem to have an issue with posting crap. His only response was to post personal insults.

“It would need a hydrogen bomb and a very powerful booster”

Actually a fission only device with thin case construction will supposedly generate a more powerful EMP than most much larger megaton thermonuclear devices.

Good list.

And another important point:

There won’t be teams of rescuers and hundreds of tons of emergency supplies rushed in to put things back to normal in a few days or weeks. The entire infrastructure will collapse and there will be no one coming in to fix it the day after tomorrow.

Unlike the 9/11 attacks, Mt. St. Helens explosion, the Japanese tsunami, hurricanes Katrina and Irene, river flooding, tornadoes, wildfires, avalanches and other disasters we have witnessed, in the aftermath of an EMP event there will be almost no transportation available. Very few, if any cars, trucks, buses, trains, boats or airplanes will be working.

Trains will stop where they are. Boats will have problems navigating to port, around 3,000 jet passenger planes will fall from the sky killing half a million or so and starting thousands of fires. There will be no ambulances, disaster teams or effective firefighting units able to respond.

There will be no food deliveries coming in 2 or 3 days to restock the supermarkets and no medicines other than what is available on the shelves locally.

And there will be almost no supplies coming from American factories - they will be knocked out too. Few if any supplies will be coming by air or sea from other countries because there will be no way to distribute them beyond a few miles of the port.

Fresh food will be left rotting in the fields. Most frozen foods will be spoiled in a few days. Within a week people by the tens of thousands will be starving to death and dying for lack of medicines every day.

If you have food stockpiled there will be hordes of people ready to take it from you by force.

Read the book “One Second After” as recommended in post #2 and others.

Fortunately my ‘puter is completely analog and is immune to EMP. As long as FR continues arriving, I’ll be fine.

Still waiting for Cobra64’s explanation. But the walls are bolted to gether to prevent EM transmissions from getting out. Also look at edge of the inner door and door frame. That is a tight fit. Looks like more EM isolation. Inner floor looks raised and probably sealed below. What is inside? Console containing critical data that owners don’t want anyone to access unless they are supposed to? One can make educated guesses.

Of course, the other approach is to google “Astron LOFAR” and see what it is. (That is the name of the picture Cobra posted). Radio astronomy application in Holland.

who sent the nuke but that could take lots of time and you would want to be damned sure you had the right people identified.

I am now of the opinion that "I don't care WHO sent the missile, if YOU are associated with them, you are in my sights."

Enough with the playing *fair* already.

Dear World:

If you want to mess with me, you and ALL your friends are going to HURT for it.

It’s a Faraday room designed to shield against EMP.

“Three H-bombs. Fission bombs won’t have the boost.”

A single 10kt bomb would do the trick, properly placed. There is very little difference between the EMP from a 10kt and a 100kt.

I’m not convinced we’d go back to the stone age, but it would be ugly.

“Most electronics today are extremely susceptible to EMP. I used to doubt this was really a threat so I researched it fairly extensively.”

The truth is, we don’t know for sure, but we do know that just because the energy is there, doesn’t mean it will couple with any particular device. It also depends on orientation, angle of incidence of the energy, and other things.

The biggest issue will be the power grid.

NOVEMBER 2012 CAN’T GET HERE SOON ENOUGH.

My biggest fear is something happening with bozo and his buddies in charge.

I watched the National Geographic special with George Bush discussing the day of 9-11 and following days. I thought to myself how lucky we were to have had him as President at the time.

They wouldn't need to send ANY Iranian ships for the purpose. An old junky freighter could do the job.

I think the Iranians are too egotistical to use just one missile. I would think they would try to barrage the whole cost for show. The USA would not let foreign oil cleanup ships in the Gulf of Mexico to clean the oil spill but I suppose they would let terrorists in.
