SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is defending the death penalty in Texas and says he's never struggled with whether any of the inmates executed during his time as governor might have been innocent.
When Perry defended capital punishment, he drew strong applause from the scores of people in the audience at the Republican debate Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

“In Texas we have death penalty and we use it!”
Ron White
I agree with Gov. Perry, if you commit the most heinous of crimes, be prepared to be subject to the ultimate justice.
And I was sitting in my office at home applauding
I knew the idiot libs would be flabbergasted by this. Brian Williams seemed shocked.
I was impressed.
I think this question was asked solely to generate headlines and reinforce stereotypes among the libs.
But who cares.
Agree: Perry expropriated his death penalty stance from Ron White:

Yes, he did, and I was proud of him in that moment, possibly his best moment of the night. Perry needs a debate coach badly, and I knew he would. I wish he’d let me coach him.
In Texas, you do the crime, you do the time, and when the time runs out, your arse is gone.
Keeps us up there in the running with Texas in the gurney races.
Then a**hat Williams tried to 'blame' that on the Governor too.
Yep. We want the libs to know that we are proud of our gene pool.
As Ron White says, “If you come to Texas and you kill one of us, we will kill you back!” (Ease up libs, Ron White is a professional comedian.)
I loved it. Brian Williams almost looked afraid. LOL!
I didn’t mean to imply that I’m against the death penalty, only the question (like perhaps most in the debate) was asked with an ulterior motive. I mean it was pretty clear already where Perry stood, why not ask more about jobs and the economy?
Yes, he did fine, but he needs to get better. What he said was usually good, he was being very careful choosing his words. I suspect the fires this week changed their schedule this week. I hope to see a step in the right direction in the next one. He din’t do anything to hurt himself, and didn’t leave any damaging soundbites. The media will run with the applause line on the death penalty as a way to try to attack him. That’s all they have.
old brian got his butt handed to him on that question. He barely got it out of his mouth when the audience began to applaud. the candidates and the audience handed both brian and that other guy their butts MORE than once.
“I knew the idiot libs would be flabbergasted by this. Brian Williams seemed shocked.”
But executing an unborn child who committed no crime, had no trial, and offered no appeals? No problem to the idiot libs.

I was just a wating for him to say, you kill one of us, we’ll kill ya back!
Seemed that way. Maybe the initial reaction of the crowd threw him off.
It was beautiful!
