The cousin of a British-born hero of 9/11, who died in the Twin Towers, has spoken of his continuing sadness and pride at what his relative did that day.
Rick Rescorla, who was head of security for banking firm Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, is credited with saving 2,700 people ten years ago by making sure they left the World Trade Centre's South Tower before it collapsed.
The 62-year-old Cornishman, who became a US citizen in the 1960s and was decorated during service in the Vietnam War, foresaw the terrorist attacks, with his warnings featuring in a Channel 4 documentary in 2005, entitled The Man Who Predicted 9/11. He made staff at the bank regularly practice escape drills which later saved their lives.
He was last seen going back up the stairs of the tower looking for stragglers. His body has never been found.

As Second Lieutenant Rescorla of the 7th Cavalry, he saw action in the battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam in 1965, earning the nickname 'Hard Core' because of his bravery. He was awarded medals including the Silver Star and a picture of him in action forms the cover of We Were Soldiers Once...And Young, a book which was later turned into the 2002 Mel Gibson film We Were Soldiers.

To me, Rick Rescorla is the greatest hero of that day. As brave as any who gave their lives, and more foreseeing, wise and effective than any other.

A remarkable man who lived an incredible life.
First off, Amen! However, this story and Hero reminds me that one of the changes in our modern society. The denigration of heroes.
Our kids frequently no longer go to schools named for an American Hero/Heroine [replaced by school board or educators] nor are they taught about heroes unless a full measure of clay feet is included. Obviously certain admirable exceptions can be included if their names are Dr. ML King Jr. or Tubman or Chavez but few others come to mind. I very sincerely believe that we do our kids a great disservice by not giving them something other than comic-book, music or actor role models as presented by our popular culture.
Men like Rick Rescorla may have had faults but such heroism should be included in a modern day Herodotus and studied as exemplars of correct behavior.

I have requested that the UK flags, which fly here where I work along side the US flag, be lowered to half staff as well on Sunday.

The local Native American hotheads were up in arms over this due to the fact that Colonel Hardin was also a noted Indian fighter (his nickname was The Indian Killer due to his sharpshooting abilities during Lord Dunmore's War). What they failed to mention was the fact that Colonel Hardin was murdered by the Shawnee while visiting them on a peace mission commissioned by President George Washington.
In the end, the local school board decided to go with the name, and John Hardin High School has been serving the community for the past ten years.
