“Please don’t interpret this as an endorsement of Bachmann’s view...”

Good Lord, why not?

She is right. As was Reagan.

It was not there until I was in high school. Are school’s better today than 40+ years ago. Hell no. If we can’t get rid of misguided and failed klunkers like the DOE now, we never will.

(Interesting local side note: Another fine Republican from Michele’s hometown (Stillwater,MN) who held the same state senate seat as her a decade or so prior also spent a year working for Reagan (under Sec. Bell) trying to reduce the federal role in education.)

As I recall, George Bush wanted to be remembered as “the education President” or something like that. We don’t need a Department of Education but even the GOP, as currently constituted, will not touch it.

“...does the federal government actually do a better job of educating our children than would state or local governments?”
Considering Little Stevie Dunham appointed a pedophile-—Kevin Jennings of “Fisting Indoctrination” infamy to be School Czar, I would say NO.
(the fact that he is no longer there is of no importance-—Little Stevie Dunham APPOINTED him in the first place.)

We are in the computer age... stop the brick and mortar approach. Give every student a computer. Use the best teachers in Webinars... fire the rest. Require school attendance 2 days a week for social interaction and eliminate the need to build more schools. Cut school taxes about 80% !

Eliminating the Dept. of Education is a great idea. After that eliminate the teachers unions.

There are articles and plenty of support for nearly free/free online courses and curriculum from places like MIT, Yale, Stanford, etc. People just have to decide to ‘enroll.’ IIRC, over 135,000 are enrolled in one such course, at Stanford, I think.

This effort eliminates the delivery system for a college and puts downward pressure on what (higher) ed is, along with eliminating its cost. Progressives, e.g., the Free Press types, have espoused free college for all.

How is the support for a ‘borderless’/free higher ed system (Not K-12, but 13-16+) any different than eliminating the federal/centralized ‘delivery’ system of education for K-12? All a person/family has to do is decide what is appropriate or needed in a child’s education.

The reason this never happens is that Senators and House members love to get jobs for their friends, nephews, distant relations, etc. etc. How can Senator Favor (R) whack the Education Department when he has planted half his kinfolk and friend of kinfolk with a job there.

Curious. Am I the only one that realizes we haven’t heard a peep out of Jimmy Carter for quite awhile now?

Wondering if his health is OK, then why isn’t he out there doing his usual grandstanding act.

Does Obama have him in a cage somewhere?

I condescended to watch TV Sunday. Michele Bachmann was on Bob Shieffer's program. Shieffer is an ass. Bachmann mopped the floor with him. I don't think he understood anything she said.

Bachmann is terrific!

“Michele Bachmann: Why do we need a Department of Education, anyway?”

Because it's mentioned in the Constitution; hasn't she read the Constitution??
I'll look up the location right now.

Oh wait a minute...

The Dept of Education was nothing but a sop to the teachers unions. It totally worthless. Most school districts don’t even get enough $$$ from the feds to make it worthwhile. All they get are unfunded mandates from Congress. It should be done away with, Bachmann’s right on that.

It isn't Constitutional; however, the primary reason to abolish te DOE is that it is a monster money eater, a labyrinth of groups jockeying for position and pork.

Every time educational failure is mentioned, the Dems answer is to throw more money at it. This money NEVER gets to the classroom. Instead, it goes to hiring more administrators that are straitly PC (they're EXTREME, but don't tell them), non thinkers, programmed little robots--I say little advisedly, not to describe girth or weight, but their brain.

It can be gotten rid of, but it must be done in a very Machiavellian way - First, remove it as a single department and put it under the auspices of say, Health and Human Services. Then, slowly delete the positions within that department.
Just bleed it dry, over the course of a few years.
