Sources on staff at Dancing With the Stars say the producers at the hit show have been very surprised by the outpouring of negative reaction to the casting of Chaz Bono as a contestant on the new season launching Sept. 19 on WLS-Channel 7.
Of course, they knew there would be some anti-Bono calls and emails, said a longtime DWTS insider. But this has been more vicious and in larger volume than was anticipated. Some of the comments are downright scary, the source added.
It seems some of the negativity may be coming from ABC viewers in the Bible Belt riled up by denunciations of Bono in sermons delivered by unhappy preachers.
In the meantime, the show firmly stands behind Bono and his pro dancing partner, Lacey Schwimmer, who has joined Bonos mom Cher in denouncing the haters. Schwimmer also reports that the vigorous rehearsals for the show already have the overweight Bono losing a pound a week.

People. Get a grip.
So, is C B dancing with a girl, a guy or with another tranny? Not that I care - I never watch the show anyway.
I remember looking at the ratings for a breakdown of the people that watch this show, it was about 80% conservative.
It is no wonder they are getting these messages and they new who their audience was when they cast him/her on this show.
This was an effort to thrust a transsexual right into the face of evangelicals and other conservatives.
I have zero sympathy for them .. bye bye audience.
Maybe people in the “Bible Belt” are sick and tired of these perverts being shoved down our throats and we are told we have to be “tolerant” of their “lifestyle”.
I feel a bit sorry for Chaz in all this....not a very easy life no matter what your perspective on her/him...
The constant drumbeat of Hollywood trying to erode any remnant of a traditional moral sensibility.
The tiniest little pushback from the American public sends the Hollywood degenerates into a tizzy.
I will never watch the show again. Oh wait, I never watched it in the first place.
I wonder if the comments are as scary as the concept of mutilating your body, taking hormones, and insisting on being called a man despite your XX chromosomes.
When you put yourself out on public display, you get what you get...hump your lumps, Chaz Bono, you asked for it...trying to blame your own trash on the Bible Belt and preachers makes you look as silly as Oblame-o and ‘Bush did it!’
If Chaz loses enough weight, maybe he’ll go back to being a girl.
BS.
This is up there with the annual ‘Apple engineer leaves iPhone prototype at local bar.’
oh let’s see....
we’re surprised nobody wants to watch:
a very heavy person dance?
an unattractive person dance?
a person confused about her sexuality dance?
a person who IS NOT A STAR dance?
a person who is “famous” for all of the above dance?
Proof that abc is out of touch with reality. After all, who watches this stuff? I don't think it's the gangbangers in San Francisco.
I think this is great that she is on because I won’t have to suffer seeing a good person getting voted off the first week. I think this is fine. She/he will make a food of itself trying to dance and then be gone.....no more problems. This is still a free country after all. I have no problem with this whatsoever.
I feel for Chaz as well. I hope this individual finds her way. That being said, I choose not to watch the show.
I’ve got a militant lesbian cousin.
Nothing enrages her more than me saying “I don’t care”
That’s how this should be dealt with. Indifference.
Yeah, I do too. It’s got to be a hard life.
Chasity is one fat ugly contestent.
Of course she doesn’t belong on DWTS’s.....she’s also not a star.
I don’t watch the school and don’t care, but they really scraped the bottom for this one.
The only way for this competition to be fair is for his partner to be a person who was born male who then switched over to become a woman.
