Rollins to step back from Bachmann role By: Maggie Haberman September 5, 2011 05:56 PM EDT

Ed Rollins is going to be stepping back from day-to-day management of the Michele Bachmann campaign, and moving into a senior advisory role, he said in an interview.

Rollins said the reason for the change is personal — his health and the rigors of a campaign.

"I wish I was 40 years old, but I'm not," he told POLITICO. "I'm 68 years old, I had a stroke a year and a half ago. I'm worn out."

Don’t step back too far you might miss your step and tumble into the canyon.

I’m not sure what the story is here. He’s moving to an advisory position. The further he gets from the media the better.

If Pollutico thinks its important....who really cares.

Next it will be he wants to spend more time with his family. Does anyone else but me think his sidlining would be due in part to her sinking in the “Poles”

He was never up to the task.

Gaffes or not you have to let Michele be Michele. That is who she is and what draws people to her. Can't bottle her up and limit her to a handful of scripted talking points.

I believe with all my heart that Bachmann was enticed into the race by someone to take out Palin, which she failed at, so rollins went into bachmann’s campaign with the intention of taking HER OUT of the race. He did. And now he can settle into the role of making sure she stays out. The question is, who paid him.

Michele Bachmann had 6 chiefs of staff in her first four years of congress. She's about as good a judge of talent as Matt Millen.

Same thing happened to Huckabee. I’ll never forget the filmed confrontation between Rollins and Huck’s wife after one of the debates. Naturally, nody knew they were being filmed. Couldn’t hear what was said but all men know what that pointed finger in the face means.

Bachmann is still in the race and still among the top 3.

Doesn’t matter now. He did the damage to Bachmann when he trashed Palin.

I lost interest in her (Bachmann) right then. She waited too long to address the issue, and then it was lame.
My interest in her hasn’t come back.

What? Have you heard the things Rollins has said about Palin?

I have no respect for the man. He sees the handwriting on the wall....She never had a chance....

Well she wasn’t forced to hire him so in the end it goes to her judgement.

This is what I want to know. Is his role shifting because he sees her poll numbers and is looking for a graceful exit or is it because Michelle realized he was a bad fit for her campaign and finally took action to correct it. If it’s the first she might as well prepare for an exit herself.

If it’s the latter that would at least indicate she realizes her campaign is in trouble and might be seeking to make corrections. I wanted her to push Rollins out a few months ago.

Two days after Sarah Palin gave him a backhand slap in her speech. Good. Maybe Bachmann is wising up.

I wrote a note to the Bachmann campaign and told them that, although I had supported Michele for Congress before, I would not give them one thin dime until they got rid of the attack dog Rollins. I told them that the day he went on the Sunday shows to rip Sarah Palin as an “unserious candidate”.
