Unemployed face tough competition: underemployed
AP ^ | September 4, 2011 | Paul Wiseman and Christopher Leonard,

The unemployed will face tough competition from the underemployed ...The job market is even worse than the 9.1 percent unemployment rate suggests.

America's 14 million unemployed aren't competing just with each other. They must also contend with 8.8 million other people not counted as unemployed -- part-timers who want full-time work.

...

Combined, the 14 million officially unemployed; the "underemployed" part-timers who want full-time work; and "discouraged" people who have stopped looking make up 16.2 percent of working-age Americans.

The Labor Department compiles the figure to assess how many people want full-time work and can't find it -- a number the unemployment rate alone doesn't capture.

...

Nationally, 4.5 unemployed people, on average, are competing for each job opening. In a healthy economy, the average is about two per opening.

The underemployed will have the advantage of being currently employed when they fill out job applications. In many companies these days, being unemployed means that your job application gets chucked straight into the trash.

The jobs crisis has led Obama to schedule a major speech Thursday night to propose steps to stimulate hiring.

Obama really needs to give this speech in Nashville standing at a podium in front of the Gibson guitar factory.

That number doesn't include the high school and college graduates over the last two years. They're adults who are now stuck living at home with their parents.
It's pretty sad. They went to school and ran up all that debt for nothing.

It is even worse than that.
Many more millions have lost their jobs and accepted full time employment
in positions far below their potential and far below the pay of their previous jobs
who also compete for those same job openings
and none of those are counted in the numbers, either.

The underemployed have exhibited a willingness and desire to work. Many unemployed have passed on these opportunities because they have been spoiled to think a good wage is their right and they refuse to work at a ‘demeaning” job. I wouldn’t hire anyone who had not done any work at all for 6 months or more - it shows a lack of work ethic and desire to be employed, even in this economy.

Oh, I know you!
First it was the asses who would not hire an out-of work 50+ year old.
Now it is the asses like you who won’t hire them because they’ve been out of work for 6 months.

I doubt that you are actually in any position to hire anyone
and I think you have no idea what you are talking about.

You are oblivious as to the how bad the job market is in certain areas.

I think I know you too - rather whine and snivel than get in the ditches to find even a low-end, low-paying opportunity to earn some cash.

You're right, I'm not in a position to hire folks, but I know a double handful of folks who are - they describe folks with your attitude all the time when explaining how hard it is to find a quality person even though the economy should have them running around like cockroaches. My wife's work advertised an opening for a HR person. They got 200+ hits in two days and most of the folks hadn't graduated high school, but really wnated that $100K job (it was really $65K, but who knows what a person is really worth?). They hired a person who was minimally qualified as far as experience, but who had been mowing lawns and doing general handyman work to try to stay above water - they know this person is willing to work and will be grateful for the full-time position. When I retired from the military, and local jobs were scarce (I became qualified in both management and in secure networking), I picked up anything that came along while I looked for a decent job. I even "stooped so low" as to do day help for a friend with his own flooring business - I scraped old tile and glue off floors and toted boxes of tile from the truck to the building for $7/hr. I also helped some folks who needed some grunt labor as they did some work in their houses - tore out sheet-rock and insulation, etc.

Sorry if I hit a sore spot, but I stand by it - if someone hasn't done some form of work for 6 continuous months, they don't want to work - they are holding out for a good position and are willing to be idle until one bites them in the ass. Just because "real jobs" aren't out there for the taking, doesn't mean opportunities to do some work can't be dug up. Potential employers respect that willingness to be useful.

WOW, while reading your comments I came to the conclusion that you are not only a ‘great American’, you are ‘God like’ and ‘all knowing’. So glad there are people like you in this world. People like you are a constant reminder to be a way different kind of person.

4.5 might be the average but, i've never applied for a position with less than ten other candidates applying for the same one

I suspect the 4.5 is the average number interviewed after weeding through 10’s, if not 100’s of applications.

I prefer "realist" to the superlatives you tendered, but they will work for those who won't.

Yes the economy sucks and many can't get by without being on the unemployment dole, but it has been extended so much that it has become a new class of long-term welfare. Instead of screaming about it - put pressure up-line and/or join something like the Tea Party to engage in pusshing for the kind of reform that will start digging us out of the trench we're in. I notice you didn't state your employment status or mention what you are willing to do for even a meager employment schedule. I see folks everyday who are willing to do more than bitch. I had a surgery that kept me from doing my lawn - I found a guy willing to come cut it and his Dad came with him - I respect them more than I do those who would rather sit at home and look on-line for a plum to grow with their name on it.

You are a pompous ass.

I've been called worse by folkks who knew enough to make the determination. Doesn't mean I'm not a realist. Tell me your story and I might pop my head out long enough to recant. I see too many passing up meager opportunities and too many others willing to do whatever it takes to take pity on those that want others' sympathy. Minor surgery made it necessary to find someone to do my lawn. The young man was accompanied by his father and both expressed the desire to keep them in mind and to use the experience as a basis to recommend them to anyone who was willing to pay a little to have them help around the house/yard, etc. Those folks' opinions mean more than someone who doesn't say why they are a special case.

You are truly amazing, in a very sad kind of way. Keep patting yourself on the back, but don’t hurt your arm.

Oh, but she has been out of work for more than 6 months,
so I guess in your case, she “need not apply”.
You pompous ass.
