Syria forces kill 14 as Red Cross pushes for better medical access

At least 14 people were killed in Syria on Sunday, as the head the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was expected to pressure the government to ensure medical access to those wounded and jailed.

Eight people were killed in the northern province of Idlib, according to activists online. In the central province of Hama, four were shot dead while driving their car. Another man was killed in a suburb of Damascus.

ICRC president Jakob Kellenberger was expected to hold talks with President Bashar Assad Sunday on humanitarian issues regarding the care of sick and wounded...

Kellenberger's visit, the second to Syria since June, is to include talks on ICRC access to detainees in the country's prisons.

Since anti-government protests began in March, local human rights groups have reported repeatedly that bodies of people detained were returned to their families with signs of torture...

Protests across Syria began in March calling for more freedoms, political reforms and the ouster of Assad. At least 2,200 people were killed since the protests began.
