Now that the GOP race is being framed as Mitt Romney vs. Rick Perry, the media has been comparing both candidates records, past accomplishments, and current popularity within the Republican party. To that extent, Bill Kristol predicted today that if the Republican race is a relatively normal one, Perry will be the GOP nominee.
Chris Wallace highlighted Romneys upcoming jobs speech, and asked Kristol what the former Massachusetts governor needs to do to reclaim his frontrunner status from Perry. Kristol offered some advice to the candidate, but then explained why Perry has a better chance of winning the race than he does.
I think he has to lay out his vision for the country, which he hasnt done yet. I dont criticize him for that, its been early, but now is the moment.
I think, in the normal course of things, Rick Perry will be the Republican nominee. He is the three-term governor of Texas, a conservative state. Hes been a successful governor. Texas has job growth, the rest of the countrys lost jobs. Hes a populist, which is very much in the spirit of the Republican party today. Mitt Romney is the one-term governor of Massachusetts, whose health care plan isnt popular with Republicans. So if you just have a normal race, so to speak, if neither candidate does badly in the debates, if voters just get to know them, and it looks the way I just described, Perry is the more normal victor.
Kristol compared this race to Ronald Reagans successful 1980 campaign, where he went on the offensive not just against the Carter administration, but the Republican establishment. Wallace pointed out that in 2008, conventional wisdom dictated that Hillary Clinton would have won a normal race against Barack Obama, but the latter candidate painted his opponent as part of the establishment, which Kristol thinks Romney may do to Perry this time around.
However, Mara Liasson pointed out that Romney seems too much like a career politician to successfully convince people that he isnt one. And as Wallace pointed out, Romney ran for Senate in 1994 in an unsuccessful run, so he may not exactly be a career politician, but a failed career politician.
Watch the video.... courtesy of Fox News:
You don’t know any millionaires? Move to Iowa, they’re all over the place. They’re the guys walking around in blue jeans and bib overalls and seed corn caps.
Whether he does or doesn't, I'm not sure the 14 million unemployed people in this country give a damn. They're looking for someone to turn the economy around.
You are correct, but you overstate slightly. There is one candidate who will not face a public colonoscopy. The incumbent will be gazed upon with naked eyes, like a shooting star. There will be no examination of either his record or his past. “The Won” can count on his media sycophants to cover for him.

Has it not yet occurred to anyone that this is NOT a normal election coming up? Every single one of these candidates is going to be scrutinized under a 100x microscope. Perry cant undergo and withstand that kind of scrutiny. He just cant. The man has baggage in his baggage.
If Perry is the nominee, they will try to make him into Bush III. I think that's why the party propaganda ministry is pushing Perry now. He will be their favorite until he gets the nomination. Then he'll be magically transformed into a dumber, more extreme, more dangerous caricature of George W. Bush.
I just don’t think he is going to get that far...especially when people realize where most of his big money funding is coming from.
Hey, you may be satisfied with a rigged process, one that is completely controlled by the money, the media, and the elites, instead of by the people, but I never will be. That’s not what was intended for this free republic.
And before the year is up, he'll have her endorsement again.
Stuff it.
Is that the best you can do? Disappointed that Perry's opposition's $100 million wasn't more effective in digging up dirt on him?
Not if voters find out about his past positions on Islam.
Your "third party" is going nowhere and it's not going to go anywhere so get real.
I can't disagree.
I loved Dubya and he was a massive disappointment.
Drew, how much are YOU willing to overlook?
So who, then? Based on the others running, he IS the most likely.
The captions should say “not running” and “running”.
“I’m not sure the 14 million unemployed people in this country give a damn. They’re looking for someone to turn the economy around.”
Yes, I think even the libs on Fox News today actually made that point themselves.
Let’s face it, Obama is a failure. Nobody, NOBODY, thinks he can do any better in the next 4 years than he’s done in the last 4 years.
He can blame Bush, Boehner, the Tsunami, the man-in-the-moon, it doesn’t matter. He’s the pres and he has failed.
This nonsense with the speech, he’s calling a joint session of Congress to do what now? NOT give a major speech? Come on, he’s making everybody’s hair hurt.
Romney, Perry, Palin, anyone of them can beat him. Ron Paul can beat him. Perot could beat him. Trump could beat him.
I’m a very partisan republican, but if the current pres. was republican I’d be ready to pull the lever for “D”. I don’t see who he wins against. Certainly not Rick “jobs, jobs, jobs” Perry.
Well shoot, you’re going “nowhere” even when you “win,” so, what the heck...might as well have a clear conscience.
I will easily overlook the nickel and dime grasping at straws coupled with the out-of-context quotes that have been repeatedly posted here in an ongoing effort to bash Govenor Perry.
I'd like to see Obama voted out of office next November. I don't live in a fantasy world where fringe and non-candidates rise out of the mist and overcome 20-point deficits to defeat incumbent Presidents. As such and with my feet firmly planted in reality, I intend to support the most conservative candidate who is a.) actually running for President and b.) has the ability to beat Obama. In the real world there's two and only two men running who meet the above criteria: Rick Perry and Mitt Romney.
Perry or Romney. Take your pick. I already know who I'm going to back.
I doubt you know what a magic eight ball is. Did your mommy explain it to you.
Give us the “insider” poop on this “America’s Party” you are the self proclaimed chairman of. You know, the one that is so secret its website is closed. You sure this is not one of Soros or ronpaul’s satellite parties they’ll use to siphon off votes from anyone challenging nobama?
I received this link today from an Orthodox Jewish friend who would probably be termed a “zionist.” I also plan to learn more about this Perry/Islam connection, but someone far more informed than I explains it in this American Thinker article.

The real battlelines have yet to be drawn. When they are, I will choose and I dread the thought of the lesser of two evils again. We simply cannot keep doing that and ever expect to take our country back.
