It’s primary function has little to do with the article directly but mostly serves as a bright waving flag for the poster to advertise his or her righteousness.

Barf Alert translates to “Hey guys I don’t like what these people in the article are doing/saying/thinking/or just their looks so much I feel obligated to you to advertise this in the topic itself instead of waiting for you to click and read what I might actually comment. Aren’t I special.”
