The Gun Free School Zones Act must be one of the worst pieces of federal legislation ever passed.

Ron Paul is the best.
Why not also repeal the 1968 Gun Control Act while you are at it?

One thousand feet is almost 3 city blocks, and the zone begins at the edge of school property, not the door of the school. In metropolitan areas these zones often overlap to the extent that lawful travel while armed is completely impossible. Which is EXACTLY the goal of these fargin traitors!

My family and some family friends used to meet up at a school on the opening day of pheasant season to go hunting. The school held a pancake breakfast every year on the opening day of the season as a fund raiser for the district. There were dozens of trucks in the parking lot with dog crates in the back. I'm sure all those trucks also had shotguns in them. It's hard to imagine my family, friends and all those innocent people taking part in that school fund raiser being arrested and thrown in jail.

The Gun Free School Zone Act, or GFSZA for short, was originally passed by Congress back in 1990, but in 1995 the Supreme Court voided the law, ruling it (quite correctly) to be an unconstitutional overreach of federal power. Congress quickly passed a revised version of the act which included the stipulation that the firearm had, moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce.
That is not quite correct. Congress passed the existing law while the Lopez case was going through the courts. See footnote 4 of Justice Rhenquist's opinion.
I think Justice O'Connor's observation that the result in the Raich case "turned Lopez into a drafting guide" for Congress has proven to be true, given the current health care case. That one is really all about the Congressional Findings stating that health care affects interstate commerce. Those Findings look pretty much exactly like the ones in 922 (q), the Gun Free School Zones Act, as passed during the court fights over the Lopez case.
