Perry’s rugged Texan image can send conflicting message
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 31, 2011 | Maggie Galehouse

[excerpt of ONE analysis in the article that includes an "executive imager," and "sociology and urban research" professors who pick over Gov. Rick Perry and rural people]

[snip]

...Perry is a “no” man, says James Hoggard, an author and English professor at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.

“He fits into what Stuart Chase, a political economist, called ‘no’ men and ‘yes’ men. ‘No’ men tend to be associated with a rural or an agrarian society, which means they’re farmers and they’re going to be working by themselves as opposed to in groups, the way people in towns work. ‘Yes’ men – town men – think more in terms of cooperation and pooling ideas.”

Tension between groups

Tension between the two groups shows up in Faulkner and other writers, Hoggard notes. People from the country think the townspeople are looking down on them, so they become belligerent.

“In many respects, that ill-tempered gruffness you find in Rick Perry fits into this,” Hoggard observes. “The belligerence reveals something that’s not being talked about directly. That’s the crack in his myth. … He’s trying to be the colorful hick who’s in rebellion against the intellectual establishment, the country guy uneasy about the townspeople. The mistake comes in assuming the townspeople are laughing at the country people, when in realty, they’re not even thinking about them at all.”

Clearly, though, people are thinking about Perry. In a recent Gallup poll, 29 percent of Republicans and Republican-minded independents said they’re most likely to support Perry for president, with Mitt Romney next, at 17 percent.

For now, Perry is still winning, leading his posse north.

Who says dumb didn’t stick?

Perry is dumb.

He did make cheer leader though. Very rugged.

Yo (Philly for Hi) Cincinatus’ Wife—Actually I’ve been posting on FR for years. I tend to reply directly to posts rather than create posts.

In the absence of any other info I like Palin and Bachmann for Pres. and Cain or West for Veep. Santorum, I think, is a true conservative but he appears to not understand we are in a bare knuckle street fight for the soul of our country. Doesn’t like direct confrontation.

My wife tells me it is still impossible for a woman to win the pres. I don’t agree. I’m looking for the person—I don’t give a hoot about gender, who will fight, win and then seriously undo each and every one Marxist policy. I’m also looking for someone who has not been a part of the Washington ruling elite. Why would I vote for any of them? All of them—conservative, Pubbie, RINO and demrat contributed to The Usurping Marxist Onada’s take over of the WH.

I’m praying there are enough of people like me out there. Otherwise, the destruction of Constitutional America will continue.

Great post and I can attest that Texas loves to maintain their roads. I have never been to Texas where there wasn’t some kind of roadwork being done. :)

Wonder if you’ll get the answer to that question.

Just so we have the semantics right—I have initiated a post perhaps three times in the many years (I think as many as 17 years) I’ve participated in FR. Mostly I do public replies.

That said I was banned once so many years ago I can’t remember what my screen name was. As I’ve changed out computers, internet providers and home addresses over the years my screen name has changed because it’s just as easy to be a new register as a registerer. I’ve never been that attached to a screen name. Usually I use some derivitive of dools007. That way all my old and porous brain has to remember is to add or subtract zeros. Hence dools0007.

I never knew why I was banned. I do not use obscene or racist language and I’ve never threatened physical harm to anyone. Some, however, may have felt threatened because of my towering intellect (sarc).

I sense some hostility in your question. Whatever, why have I become so interesting to you? I’ve been on sickoflibs ping list for years.

I just noticed that you said you had been posting for years.

I understand about the not understanding why issue, you’re not alone. No need to get too detailed. I gotcha.

Some who have been banned on the other hand like to play games that’s all.

LOL, I can just picture these ‘professors’, probably skinny little bald men wearing spectacles and shuffling through their papers..... I always thought of a ‘yes’ man as a brown noser....pardon the image.

Give me a John Wayne type.

Perry, on the other hand, is “the self-made guy you don’t want to have a beer with because he’ll lecture you,” Grabowski says. He’s the politician who “gets up earlier and studies harder.”

Sounds good to me.

Thanks for your post. There are many people lurking on FR who play games as we know. Among them are libertarian, RINO and demrat lurkers. Most are spotted fairly quickly. Others not so quickly. But ultimately they all show their hand at some point.

I’m not one to play games—especially these days. Constitutional America is in a dead serious fight to survive the Marxist assault. Time for games is way past.
