"Was this land even farm land when the whites settled the region?"

Were there blacks living in what is now known as South Africa when the whites arrived. I have seen some reports that the blacks came south at the same time as the whites came on shore. Very politically incorrect, but .....

IIRC, the Zulus were moving south about the same time the Boers moved north (to escape the British). The local aboriginal population didn’t stand a chance, although on balance it was better to be conquered by the Boers.

No. The native South Africans were the San People, aka Bushmen/Hottentots. Many of them were killed off by blacks migrating from the north and whites settling the south and moving further inland. The San are more brown and I think shorter in statue.

The whites were in what is now SA before the blacks, but not before the San.

San People

Google and there are many links for the San People.
