SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 29 -- After experiencing some chest discomfort over the weekend, San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer was taken to the emergency room at Long Beach Memorial Hospital Aug. 28 by Cardinal William Levada, the archdiocese announced. They had been in the final days of their vacation in Southern California. The archbishop was given an angiogram and his doctors recommended he stay overnight at the hospital for observation.

This morning, at the recommendation of his cardiologists, the archbishop underwent successful cardiac double bypass surgery. Cardinal Levada has relayed the doctors’ report that Archbishop Niederauer is doing well and is in good condition in the intensive care unit at Long Beach Memorial. "We are encouraged by this initial report," the archdiocese said in a statement. "However, the doctors have informed us that the next 24 hours are critical. Prayers are requested from the priests, deacons, religious and laity of the archdiocese."

These two important men of the Church vacation together yearly in their privately owned luxury condo in southern California. They are part of the so-called "St. John Don Juans," a friendly group that all graduated about the same time in the 1960's from the infamous seminary in Camarillo. Cardinal Mahony is one of the group as well.

It's rather interesting that Levada, whose assignment is in Rome and who is in no official capacity here, is making the statements and dealing with the public rather than the normal procedure of the Archdiocese spokesman in California doing that. It also is strange that this is getting virtually no news coverage considering the controversies the media has hyped up over these two since the "scandal" of 2002.

I hope Archbishop George gets better soon...

...and I’ll pray that he retires ASAP so an actual, EMPHATIC AND BRAVE pro-life and anti-gay-sex bishop can take his place!

“EMPHATIC AND BRAVE pro-life and anti-gay-sex bishop’

Is that type of Catholic allowed in San Francisco?

Prayers for the Archbishop.

Archbishop Levada, Archbishop Emeritus of the San Francisco, likely just fell into the old habit of speaking for the Archdiocese, as well as for his friend.

On a side note, I was in Denver last month and Cardinal O’Malley of Boston was a concelebrant at Mass in the Cathedral with Archbishop Chaput. Turns out they were classmates. They are also Franciscans.

They are also not on the way out (and good riddance to some of these guys hovering around 75), but part of what Fr. Z calls the Pope’s Marshall Plan. Interesting they were classmates, they have very different styles and personalities, and jumped right into their new jobs with gusto.

OH DEAR! Bless the Archbishop! My Greek Orthodox wife, kids and I (Roman Catholic) had enjoyed a beautiful sermon by the Archbishop at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in LA the morning of the day the Archbishop took ill. The Archbishop had been invited to visit by our priest after they had been together recently on an Orthodox / RC ecumenical pilgrimage to Athens and Constaninople. He joked during the sermon about the small Greek luncheon—an oxymoron if you have been to any Greek event surrounding a meal. Prayers for his speedy recovery. The Archbishop’s visit to our Orthodox community was warmly received—another mall step in the developing momentum toward unification of the one holy and apostolic Catholic church.
