Mitt Romney is going into the lions den today.
Romney is neither a veteran nor a Texan, but he is heading to San Antonio, Texas to address the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention one day after Gov. Rick Perry, who is both a veteran and a Texan, fired up the crowd with a patriotic paean to American exceptionalism.
But with poll after poll showing Romney slipping into Perrys wake, the former Massachusetts governor is keen to show that hes not backing down. The latest CNN survey has Perry nearly doubling Romney among all candidates running or considering a run and with a share of voters larger than Romney and third-place Rep. Michele Bachmann combined when only declared candidates were offered.
While Romney has a low and slow strategy that relies on his presidential plausibility and big fundraising to outlast more exciting contenders, including Perry, that strategy would cease to be viable if the insiders and money men backing Romney came to believe his candidacy was doomed. To avoid being marginalized, Romney must demonstrate to the political press that he has a plan to knock down Perry.
(snip)
This is backed up in Romneys oft-repeated implicit argument that Perry has spent an awful lot of time in government for a guy who opposes big government, while Romney spent only four years in public office (Not for lack of trying, though. Romney lost previous bids for a Senate seat and the presidency.)
But the heart of the Romney strategy seems to be to stand back and allow Bachmann to tear apart Perry to rip his eyes out, as she did to Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

You are deceived if you think the choice is only Perry or Romney....and by not voting for either is voting for Obama.
I will not play the vote against Obama game just to have another Rhino assume control....not to mention both are going to lead this nation on a global scale.
This election is too important to let the Democrates and Media determine who our candidates are. Perry jumped in only to offset Romney....I don’t believe he ever wanted the position...no doubt somebody has “payed” to get Perry to “play”....that’s his style.
See this is what happens to loser candidates. They can’t get their message across, they can’t defend their positions, they can’t garner enthusiasm from voters for their ideas; so they hem and haw and attack the candidates. Candidates should work on their inadequacies first and only go after an opponent’s glaring flaws. Anyone can be a gnat. People want leaders, and interesting personalities. That’s just politics.
Perry is no RINO by any sane definition of the term.
If Obama gets four more years because of your decision, you and others like you are to blame for the destruction that will follow. You'll have no right to complain about anything.
That’s you’re opinion....I do think Perry is a rhino and have varied reasons other than that why I will not vote for him.
You and others can kick and scream all you want that if people don’t vote for “your guy” that the responsiblitlyt if Obama is re-elected is ours are fulll of crap.
Why aren’t people voting for conservatives in the primary? Why get behind one who is not simply is causing me to question who is really conservative.
I can’t believe some people are such spoiled-sports that they would not vote against Obama, just because their guy or girl didn’t win. Such is life.
The election has barely begun and you’re already calling people spoiled sports and other such names...who do not get on the bandwagon of voting “against” Obama. I will not choose my candidate that way.
I am voting for the one who I believe will both be good for our country and is conservative. Not all have declared.....until the full body is present it’s ridiculous to jump on people.
So we agree to disagree.
They have no reason to “lay a glove on each other”. That’s why they haven’t.
They move in different orbs. Romney will either win or lose based on people’s votes that are not gettable votes for Michele, and vice versa.
The thought that each needs the other’s help to knock someone else down that they are in competition with, is in my unalterable view, nothing more than a mirage. It isn’t real, even if it looks real.
Michele lacks the political clout to help Romney even if she wanted to. Romney lacks the political clout to help Michele. Only a very, very strong, overpowering candidate has the clout to pick a huge risk for VP and get away with it. Romney isn’t. As popular as Michele is in some circles, she is not strong in being perceived as either a President or a Vice President.
Both of these people’s weakness was shown up when Rick Perry entered the race.
Now, Rick Perry blows away the competition. Romney suffers, Bachmann suffers, even Palin suffers if she gets in at this late date after Perry.
I believed in the truth of their weakness before Perry got in. The results of his entry only confirmed what I believed.
Neither one of them is in a position to play political games using one another and get anywhere with it. If they are toying with it, rather than realizing they stand or fall on their own, against frontrunner Perry, I would be very surprised.
But if toying, they will realize their folly soon enough.
You really need the attention. I’m assuming that you won’t vote if your guy doesn’t win the primary? Am I wrong? If so, my apologies.
It isn't, but some people need intrigue, they need DRAMA MAMA! to stay interested. It's called not having a brain.
I will always vote...men died for that right we have to do so. This crap that people won’t vote if their guy doesn’t get the primary election is nonsense.
Apology accepted.
At this point, Palin does suffer a bit of fund raising from getting in late, but she is still fund-raising in a sense through her PAC. She has a huge advantage that few people are taking notice of in the fact that she is already vetted and has high positives and high negatives that can't get any worse. I do think she can improve on the negatives with MOMENTUM BABY! That's right people often have very negative opinions of candidates UNTIL that candidate demonstrates the ability to WIN. Palin has a bird's eye view of what is going on, and I think she can use this to her advantage strategy-wise ESPECIALLY if she swoops in at the last minute.
Deep, dark conspiracies, yeah, that keeps it “interesting”.
When what it looks like on the surface is what’s really happening.
Neither has what it takes to carry the other’s water, which was true from the beginning, but was demonstrated to be true once Perry got in.
I think she suffers too much from Perry’s entry.
Too much.
More so than you see her suffering from it.
But that’s ok...
As long as you don’t vote for Donald Trump 3rd-party we can still be friends.
“More so than you see her suffering from it.
But thats ok...”
That could be, but there is still a lot of time and though his flamboyance has pole-vaulted him to the top, Perry has some glaring warts. The press from both sides will picking at those, and they are more substantive than Palin’s so-called flaws. Only time will tell.
Trump is a mouthpiece that works to stir the waters...and he gets the press for doing so. He’s fun to watch...but not as President he’d be pretty bad.....However I like his outlook concerning China...and his business dealings internationally are interesting to follow.
Nope...Not for Trump...
Perry’s greatest problem is he does not see the Islamic threat for what it is. His understanding of Islam is very much lacking OR He knows fully well and has decided to carry them into our country as he has done in TExas regardless of how this places our national security in dire straits.
I believe he knows...but has chosen to push the “soft side” of Islam their agenda permotes in order to decieve politicians and the overall general public....for the sake of the dollar, as Perry is a money man. It’s all about the money for him....and the glory money nrings with it.
His life evidences such...he’s made his wealth while being a politician...not before.
Perry will paly in whatever park brings in the money.....I suspect if he’d been in NYC after 9/11 when the ME leader presented his check....Perry would have accepted it and helped them build a Mosque with it. Just as he has done in Texas.
Texas will be paying a huge price down the road here...already they have an Islamic Court there which Muslims can negotiate from....a very fine line he’s treading and the beginnings of what will indeed come.
So I will not vote for someone who does not understand the Islamic threat...nor how it operates within our country. Perry doesn’t.
This is pretty much my impression of Perry at this point, but shhh, having an objective opinion about Perry around here gets you labeled as a spammer.
Anyone in who is an advocate of open borders and supports legislation such as the DREAM act is a total dangerous lunatic. Texas is rife with sharia law at the moment.
Putting Romney's faults aside for the moment, you can tell he is very strong on immigration and Islam. I've read through a good portion of his book No Apology and though it's a plodding boring read, I've found some interesting statements.
Page 65: ....fundamental differences between our respective worldviews are both striking and numerous. For example, while Western nations take care to separate church from state, for the Islamists, religion and government are to be one. The founding fathers of Islam proclaimed that "Islam is a religion and a state." Rather than limiting itself to prescribing only spiritual laws, fundamentalist Islam seeks to dominate and control every aspect of society, from economic policies to social interactions, and from individual daily habits to the functioning of government. Thus, Islamists would replace secular systems of justice with sharia. From the viewpoint of the Islamist, the government of an Islamic nation that is not sufficiently fundamentalist is not just wrong, it is evil...
Page 66: To the Islamist, democracy is a form of blasphemy; in democracies, immutable law proscribed by God may be changed by man. In the eyes of the Islamic fundamentalists, America as the "author of liberty" and champion of democracy" is the most immoral of nations.
Romney wrote a great deal on the subject of Islam. Say what you want about Romney, he's very antithetical to Islam. You read that right, he is anit-Islam. I think this is because of his strong Morman religious convictions. There are many example of this ideology in his book. While I don't support Romney's every waking word, I'm with him on this issue.
Maybe they are and view Perry as conservative. That is what every poll is showing.
But with poll after poll showing Romney slipping into Perrys wake...Romney was always just a place-holder. Didn't he know that?
