PRINCETON, NJ

Rick Perry's candidacy has attracted strong initial support from Republicans who identify themselves as supporters of the Tea Party movement. Perry leads by 21 percentage points over the closest contenders among this group, Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann. Among Republicans who say they do not support the Tea Party movement, Romney and Perry are essentially tied

These results are based on an Aug. 17-21 Gallup poll, which showed Perry overtaking Romney as the front-runner for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination among all Republicans nationwide.

The poll finds that 58% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents identify themselves as supporters of the Tea Party movement, with 36% saying they do not consider themselves supporters. Included among the group of Tea Party supporters is a smaller group -- representing 12% of Republicans -- who say they are "strong" supporters of the movement. Among this smaller group, Perry's lead is even greater, 46% to 16%, over Bachmann, with all other candidates in single digits...

In Gallup’s July measurement of Republicans’ nomination preferences, before Perry officially entered the race, Romney held a slight edge over Bachmann among Tea Party supporters, 29% to 23%. Romney led Paul by 25% to 16% among nonsupporters.

Good for you keeping an open mind here, but Rick Perry NEVER bought into the global warming thing.

How does one poll a tea partier exactly? I personally find it to be a mindset not a party.

Of course it's not a cohesive party...it's a general movement...when I read the headline I knew immediately it was baloney...nothing to see here...move along...

I consider myself a tea partier and Perry is my pick as of right now.

So therefore the whole tea party movement supports Perry...case closed! (heavy sarcasm off now)

The Tea Party isn't back Perry.
No one in their right mind would back that RINO.
He won't do a damn thing about ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
Better back Palin or Bachmann, if you want real conservatism.

Anyone can say they consider themselves a Tea Partier, but that doesn’t make it so. Perry troll alert!

Man, I can’t wait for the Perry gas balloon to flutter to the ground in a wrinky heap.

Genuine Tea Partiers are not backing a demrat turncoat who supported Carter and Gore and Gore’s false global warming claims. They are not supporting a man who just signed a hate bill into law in Texas. We all know hate laws are used by the Marxists to silence their opposition.

Why support Perry when there already “clean” conservatives we can choose from?

This is all just more of the Perrybots trying to make it appear Perry is unstoppable. All Perry is to me is the noisy idiot down the hall who thinks he’s God’s gift to mankind.

Yes. Perry looks like a RINO to me. I’d much rather have Herman Cain, Mechele Bachmann, or Sarah Palin.

So why has Perry suddenly burst onto the polical scene like gangbusters? Looks to me like a huge, rich, powerful political machine is behind him.

The MSM empire would rather have Perry as the GOP contender than one of the more strictly conservative faces? Hoping that he will be a Bushy mush?

Same here. I consider this so called poll to be suspect. I have several friends in the T party movement in my area and they are very suspicious of a Perry run as well.

1. Bachmann
2. Palin
3. Preferrably some other conservative
4. Preferrably some other conservative
5. Preferrably some other conservative
6. Preferrably some other conservative or possibly as a last choice,
7. Perry

Maybe so, but it's not the MSM empire that is pushing Perry. It's a well financed, well organized political machine.
