(AP) LAS VEGAS A clean energy revolution is under way in the United States but isn't happening quickly enough, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday.
Reid told reporters in advance of a clean energy summit in Las Vegas that the country is still too dependent on foreign oil and needs to change that to help national defense and the economy.
"Our dependence on foreign oil is making our nation less secure, and is certainly damaging the health of our citizens," he said.
Reid said he expects clean energy projects to be part of jobs bills the Senate will consider when it returns to session next week.
The Tuesday summit at the Aria Resort & Casino is expected to include Vice President Joe Biden, several governors and other influential policy experts, including Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.
In addition to lawmakers trading ideas, previous summits have included announcements and discussions about investments in renewable energy.
John Podesta, chief executive of the Center for American Progress, said discussions at the summit have led to tax incentives for renewable energy and funding for transmission line projects in Nevada and elsewhere.

Would your company go out of business without free money from taxpayers?
Harry wants a bunch of those useless wind mills for Nevada. Maybe he can get some cheap from Texas, where the winds have proven to be far too unreliable to make wind power a viable alternative. By the way, how much public money has been plowed into the wind energy sector in Texas and has that “investment” been supported by Perry?
We lost 35% of the workforce back in April due to poor sales, last I looked we had eighteen 400 KW power plants sitting in the parking lot hoping the grants in California and South Korea would kick back in, why pay 1.6 million dollars when the Government would give you half a million in kind.
I'm as conservative as can be so I'm torn, a good paying job and employed or probably not until these engineers can figure it out.
I believe the hard core leadership are deliberately doing many things to destroy the country. Everything from flooding the country with 3rd world immigrants, to global warming, to collapsing the economy. They are trying to do it because they hate their own country. I am not a conspiracy nut, but why do the rats continue doing things that even they know, do not work?
Stupidity is...
Oh, I'm sorry. Dingy is no doubt planning on lots more programs like this one: Seattle Green Jobs Program Gets $20M, Creates 14 Posts.
Sure, Reid still has Donald Trumps support...
"Green" energy sources may be economically feasible 20-30 years from now, but they simply are not today. If you can come up with a more efficient and convenient energy source than fossil fuels, great. Making unsafe plastic cars doesn't count.
I just posted this on another thread:
What REALLY pisses me off, is this combination of liberal environmentalism, antipathy to all things petroleum, nanny statism and liberal obsession with public transportation.
They know what is best for us, and are determined to make us take that road against our will. Liberals are determined to drive up the cost of energy to achieve this end, and it isnt just because they dont for a damned second understand the relationship between energy and an economy, but because they simply dont care.
As a matter of fact, driving our economy into the toilet to achieve their goals in these respects would be a two-fer, putting our country in our proper place (in their world, USA making up X percent of the worlds population, and using X percent of the worlds resources instead of a much greater Y percent of resources)
I hate liberalism and all it stands for down to the bottom of my heart. As far as I am concerned, liberalism is the root of all things we have wrong with this country.
I understand the spot you are in. It is easy to have principles when one doesn’t have to make tough choices.
Takes a lot of dung to light the Vegas Strip, but I'm sure that Harry and Joe are up to the task.
Senator Harry Clueless
Big oil pays a bundle in taxes already and has no greater profits than big techology or big anything else. It’s all a scam dreamed up by enviro-jerks who want us to walk everywhere and live in cold caves.
BTW, anyone know where one can buy NON-energy efficient washing machines? Mexico or Canada, perhaps?
Alternative energy is and shall always remain the technology of the future
Indeed. Viable alternative energy certainly isn’t here today, which is reason enough for the looney left to attempt to force the issue,
