Northern Nevada will host one of the largest and most innovative art and cultural events in the nation this week, yet most local residents have never experienced the weeklong Burning Man Festival. Western Nevada College offers a fascinating glimpse into the Burning Man culture of self-expression and self-reliance through a photography exhibit that portrays the art, costumes and energy of the event. The Culture of Burning Man, showing through Oct. 15, is made possible by the Black Rock Arts Foundation, and is curated by local artist Maria Partridge.

self-reliance .... lol
Here is their radical self-reliance list

When they say self-reliance, it means it is a pot luck, bring your own food and share.
Lots of rules for that freewheeling bunch.
that is what I was thinking,
I thought these guys were going to gather roots and berries and get together an roast a wild animal over a bon fire....
nope...just some lsd tripen
I’m 99% certain this is a bunch of hippies and wannabe hippies. A good friend of mine who is an uber lefty...way out there lefty...never misses it.
Coming soon, Burning Man McDonalds.
Right, because lotus-eating artistic hippie types are just all about the self-reliance. Har har har. How many of these freaks do you think can replace an alternator or milk a cow?
Our local JC guy who teaches classes leading to an alcohol and drug counselling certificate attends every year.
Official ticketholders just received a partial encrypted listing of events by iphone last night. I spent hours checking the partial list of hundreds of amazing events and interactive art you will find nowhere else. Many allow no photos/video and I already said too much so it explains the lack of information out there.
The remainder of the list and detailed city map is unlocked with a decryption code at the gate. I heard more than half of the events are not even listed.
This is not a sit-on-your-ass and whine woodstock hippie fest. I see now this is an entire 50000 person city that becomes a work of art and nearly everyone participates instead of being just a spectator.
Many FReepers that actually know what the festival is about recommend going as you can see on my thread:
I will come as long as there isn’t a bunch of people stoned out of their mind .... stoners make me mad and it causes my dogs to eat people
Drugs, no self-respect, no rules or laws, left over hippies from the 60’s.
Not a bunch of people I would ever want to sit down to dinner with.
Hopefully some Hanta virus will get kicked up.
Sorry, I don't.
I live here in Northern Nevada. Each year about this time I pray the Air Force begins using the Black Rock Desert for practicing livefire strafing runs....of course I also hope for the Army to break out some old 155mm Long Toms with the tactical nuclear shells...

The participants are WallStreet bankers?
